Johnny O’s World Famous Original Spudnuts® Target Audience: Adults 35+ who fondly remember Spudnuts®, North America’s top selling doughnut brand from 1940 -1979. Benefit: Johnny O’s World Famous Original Spudnuts® are the planet’s most mouth-watering doughnut – lite, airy, and delicious -- made with the same potato-mix ingredients and the original recipe that made it North America’s most popular brand from 1940-1979. Reason Why: That’s because Johnny O’s World Famous Original Spudnuts® has the secret potato-mix recipe originally created by the Pelton Brothers, the founders of Spudnuts® in 1940, bringing back the brand in its original, delicious taste for the millions of consumers who fondly remember it from their younger days. Spudnuts® History: After brothers Al and Bob Pelton of Salt Lake City ate potato-based doughnuts in Germany in 1936, they created a potato based doughnut mix that became the secret recipe for world famous Spudnuts®. They went into business in 1940. By 1968, there were over 315 Spudnuts® Shops, making it the largest doughnut franchise in North America. The chain was sold to Dakota Bake N Serve in 1973, and a few years later, a financial scandal involving Dakota Bake N Serve management put the company and the Spudnuts® manufacturing facility into bankruptcy. Unable to provide the Spudnuts® Shops with doughnut mix, many of the local franchises tried and failed to replicate the secret recipe, and the brand disappeared, with the shops converting to selling flour-based donuts. During the existence of Spudnuts®, there were over 600 Spudnuts® Shops located across all 50 United States, plus Mexico and Canada. The Product: Johnny O’s World Famous Original Spudnuts® are large, fluffy and airy, never soggy or greasy. They are made of a special blend of the finest wheat flour, dehydrated potatoes – from which the name Spudnuts® is taken – milk solids, whole fresh eggs, and other ingredients mixed and blended perfectly to the secret formula. Raised in a proof box, they are then cooked at an exact temperature, and finely glazed or frosted. Creative Considerations: Logo must work for building signs, printed materials, and in-store signage. Should have a nostalgic look and feel.
