Spiritualism may be a minority religion but the success of TV programs like Ghost Whisperer and Medium reflects a wide interest in the possibility of spirit communication – which is at the core of Spiritualism's beliefs. For nearly 80 years, Psychic News has been published as a tabloid weekly newspaper, bringing its readers around the globe news and views about the activities and achievements of well-known Spiritualists and mediums and, above all, in-depth features on evidence for an after-life and the spiritual philosophy based on that truth. Now, the UK-based newspaper is ready for a makeover that will move its design into the 21st century, as it transforms into a fortnightly A4 publication that will be published as both a printed and a digital magazine, in PDF format.
The challenge is to produce a logo for "Psychic News" that is contemporary and avoids the visual gimmicks that might usually be associated with the words "psychic" or "spirits". The new logo will be accompanied by the strapline: "the independent voice of Spiritualism". This should be a separate element that can be used in conjunction with the logo but perhaps in different configurations, depending on whether it is appearing on the magazine's masthead, on stationery, business cards or in advertisements.
The publishers are open-minded as to whether the logo's use as a title or masthead on the A4 publication should go across the top of the magazine or be an isolated element that sits in the top left corner of the cover. At this stage in the planning, the cover is likely to be an entire image on which headlines from some of the magazine's contents are superimposed.
Lastly, the logo's designer should indicate how the logo, or an element of it, can be utilised to provide an APP icon for display on smartphones or tablets.
