Our company is called Works on Paper. The company provides writing services for people (personal ads, eulogies, private communications) and businesses (white papers, client reports, web copy, content marketing materials). The tagline for the company is: “Life is just words + deeds. We do words.”
The company is called Works on Paper because most people struggle to take ideas, thoughts, and emotions that work in their heads and turn them into something that works on paper. That is, most people aren’t very effective writers. It’s our job to make them sound as smart, sensitive, thorough, and thoughtful on paper (or in a speech, if that ends up being the medium) as they sound in their own heads.
The conceit of the tag line is that words are hugely important in life, so it’s damn important that we get them right. That’s why our company exists.
Of course, it’s possible to have a lot of fun with words, too, and we do that. Jokes are part of our stock in trade (not that you could tell from this incredibly sober write-up). We also imagine doing some merchandising in the future that will feature humorous t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc.
In terms of core values, authenticity and simplicity are big ones. We want to find the truth and express it simply. Excellence is another one; as noted above, we think words are worth getting right. Accountability is another; we think consequences need to follow from actions in business and in life.
