Overall, I'm looking to communicate an idea of simplicity, a minimum of superfluous elements and a focus on the important issues. If combined with a sense of technical competence, that would be great. A small amount of "flair" is OK. - like the icing on a cake.
I've included two figures:
One is a quick and nasty letterhead I typed up out of necessity which uses a courier type font - which is reminiscent of computer code (we work a lot with coding) - here I thought the full stop helped to imply a limit (i.e. only the salient (or important) points are included). I like the idea of this type of font for the text in the logo, but if you have better ideas, go for it.
Secondly, the shape of a log-normal distribution, which is evocative of the concept of risk of extreme events (flood, storms) which we work with, and also sort of has the shape of a breaking wave - coastal engineering and science is probably the most focussed area of what we do. I thought the shape of the curve could be incorporated, but don't feel obliged to.
