Comma rule infographic to appeal to students of any age

The correct situations in which to use a comma. This should be organised in a clear, easy to follow way that builds up to a full understanding using simple steps.

Commas are used for lists: If you are listing several nouns, adjectives, adverbs or even clauses, you should separate each item with a comma. Today I need to go shopping, draft my essay and mow the lawn. Strong, stormy winds battered the houses along the coast. Commas are used around interrupting clauses: An interrupting clause is a phrase that might add extra information to a sentence but could be removed without changing the meaning of the sentence. The students, especially those who attended every class, generally did well in the assignment. Commas are used after introductory words: Introductory words set the context for the following clause. They include connective words (e.g. however), time phrases (on Monday), and other other qualifiers to the following clause. In my opinion, plagiarism is easy to avoid with proper referencing. Avoiding comma splices: A comma splice is an error caused by using a comma to link two clauses which could both be their own sentence. These can be fixed by using a full stop or semicolon instead of the comma or by following the comma with a coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. Error: The students were satisfied with their marks, they had all scored over 80%. Correct: The students were satisfied with their marks; they had all scored over 80%.

Colouring should ideally be fairly neutral as our service is embedded in a lot of different university sites which use their own branding. Content needs to be accessible and appropriate for children while also being engaging for adult learners. We plan to include the resulting design as a supporting resource to text based explanations as a way to better engage visual learners. All designs should be at least AA level based on the WCAG guidelines (ideally AAA). The oatmeal semicolon poster (https://theoatmeal.com/comics/semicolon) is my example of a useful and engaging guide that’s not quite appropriate for our target audience. Ideally we would like to engage with the winning designer to create a small series of additional infographics after the competition.
