I'm looking for something to feature as a web page background and/or website header image, basically, a graphic that helps paint a picture of what my story is about, but not a true book cover.
The general idea: An outcrop of rock/small cliff overlooking a massive castle. It's not a mountain or anything, so it should still be grassy. Something like "pride rock" from the Lion King comes to mind. The castle is in the background and doesn't need to take up much space, but some details like the towers, spires, the keep, etc, would be nice.
The focus should be on the cliff: There's a basic headstone with the lettering facing away from the viewer. Kneeling at the grave, facing the headstone and the viewer, is the main character, Rylar. Possibly have him holding a sword in a classic kneeling-knight pose. Or, setting a helmet (spartan/greek style, sleek and angular, but no feathers or plumes), at the foot of the grave.
Rylar wears ornate red, black, and gold armor. I'm not against the idea of a cloak, red or black. He wields two short swords, one set with a red pommel and the other, blue, and they should be on his hips, not his back. He is in his late thirties, shorter than average, and generally serious-looking. He is olive-skinned, has dark eyes and black hair. The sides of his head are shaved, his hair is moderate length, and he has a widow's peak. It's not quite a mohawk, as his hair isn't spiked up, but it's a hybrid of that and a basic, militaristic cut. I drew inspiration from viking hairstyles, although his hair isn't nearly as long or elaborate, braided, etc. I just like the hair-only-on-top style. He has closely-shaved stubble and a ragged scar on one side of his jaw that runs from his upper lip down to his chin. He is described as sharp-featured. His facial expression in the scene, if it can be that detailed, is shame and/or regret.
I also want to really capture the scenery of the land. Behind the castle runs a river (east/west, left/right), and beyond lie endless fields of green with mountains in the far distance to the north, maybe just as silhouettes. The sun and various satellites (stars, comets, etc) play a role in the story, so I want a beautiful color scheme in the sky. I think a dusky tone would work well, with some golden/pink/orange tinges from a sunset (left side) or sunrise (right side). A few regular stars, with one bigger red star or a red-streaking comet, would look great in the sky. Maybe purple could work in the color scheme too.
In closing, I want the work to convey both a sense of intimacy with the main character's grief, but also a sense of grand scale and awe. I realize I'm asking for a lot here, but hopefully, the amount of detail I gave will help. I understand it may not be possible to get a great, close-up view of his face AND the amazing scenery, but that's where you can take some creative liberty and do what you think works best with the distance and perspective.
