CREST Security Review (CSR) translates and communicates research on all aspects of understanding, countering and mitigating security threats. CREST (a consortium of five UK universities led by Lancaster University) includes leading academics from across the social and economic sciences engaged on a broad programme of research, including on violent ideologies and actors, online behaviour, effective interviewing, and protective security. These researchers and others from universities around the world write in CSR to succinctly communicate their cutting-edge research to intelligent non-specialists. Our target audiences are time-poor practitioners (e.g. police, security-services, policy-makers) who need to engage with the latest evidence to inform and improve their practice. Our articles are practical (e.g., what do you need to do to get evidence in this situation), brief and easy to engage with.
What's your vision?
We would like an illustration to capture the theme of this issue of CREST. It should be striking and distinctive. We have turned down suggestions of images so far that focused on negative aspects of eliciting information (for example, clichéd images of interrogation suites; lamps in peoples’ eyes; scared looking interviewees). This magazine communicates evidence about information elicitation, which might easily be talking to child victims of sexual exploitation, witnesses of crimes as well as terror suspects.
Our communications aim to: • be evidenced-based • be compelling, clear, concise, and practical • make it clear what we would encourage people to think, and/or do as a result of our communication • be written in plain English to benefit a wide range of stakeholders We’d like this magazine to visually stand out – while at the same time in an un-fussy practical style which aids easy engagement. The magazine will be available in print as well as on-line, both under a creative commons licence (there will be no advertisements, nor charge – this is an academic non-profit venture). Our website is at: https://crestresearch.ac.uk The page size for this cover is 205x275. We have a further illustration to commission for the inside of the magazine, which we will commission with the successful winner of this design after this competition is finished.
