Entertainment & The Arts
This is an anthology (an anthology is collection of writing by different authors put together into one book) of 1st chapters of novels that were never finished. The collection is designed to be enjoyed by anyone who likes reading, the creative process, and thinking about the idea of failure and what it means for moving forward with making things. It is especially designed to be read by writers.
What's your vision?
I need an illustration for a book cover. I will put the text on it after it is done, but there will need to be space left for some text (the title, highlight authors). The printed book will be 6" x 9". There should be some bleed to be safe. It should also work as a smaller image/thumbnail online. The title of the book is "Icarus Also Flew." The title is from a poem by Jack Gilbert that can be read here: http://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/failing-and-flying You don't have to take it too literally but that is the inspiration. What I mean by "Icarus Also Flew" is trying to communicate is that failure is part of the process of success. For those not familiar with the greek myth, Icarus is the guy who built wings, flew too close to the sun, had his wings melt off, and fell to his death. Basically, by including 1st chapters of unfinished novels, I'm saying to the writers who failed to finish that they also succeeded, because writing at all (or flying at all) is a great thing. I'd like an illustration that captures one or more of the following things: 1. Giving up/quitting 2. Falling from the sky (nothing splatting on the ground though) 3. Writing 4. Perseverence For example, an illustration of a half-painted wall, a splatter, and painty footprints huffing off is an example of something that would work because it shows that the painter quit. Another example: An illustration of tangled, broken wings left on the ground, and footprints leading away from them, showing that whoever was wearing the wings got up and moved on. This would work because it addresses the themes of falling, and also of perseverance. (He kept going.) However, if you have an idea that fits but is not something I described, feel free to enter it. Colorful is good, but I will consider black and white. Nothing cartoony please. Humor ok though. Not considering images that appear to be in full or part just digitally manipulated photographs. No gore/blood please. Another concept you could use is to "not finish" the book cover. To illustrate the idea of quitting you could leave part of the image obviously "half done."

David has been incredible throughout. We were difficult clients, with constant delays due to overall busy-ness and operational issues that affected the project, and David patiently waited for our overdue feedback at every step, then quickly and creatively effected changes to improve the designs. His artwork was very strong and we will definitely continue to work with him in future, which is the strongest recommendation I can give. I'd also note that the scope of our project went well beyond some of the example artwork in David's 99D portfolio, so I'd also suggest using him even if your project isn't an exact match with his normal style.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
