Jason TakeLessons got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
iOS App Icon for an On-Demand Live Video Tutoring App
Check out Jason TakeLessons's Icon or button contest…
We are a marketplace that connects students with private instructors, for both in-person and online lessons. Our newest product offering, "TakeLessons Now", is an iPhone app that connects college/high-school students to on-demand expert tutors over live video chat, through their iPhone.
What's your vision?
We need an app icon for this new iPhone app, "TakeLessons Now". This app is like a tutor in your pocket. Students will use it to get 1-on-1 help with homework, tests, and more. Ace that exam. Solve that problem. Raise those grades. Here is some input from our team on what we'd like the app icon to incorporate or convey: - "Speed" -- something that equates to right now, on-demand, timely, moving fast - "Live" -- connecting a student to a live tutor is a differentiator for us, so have some notion of live video chat with a person - "Homework" -- something that imparts it will help them with homework, school, finals - "Simplistic" -- app icon should be minimalist in approach - "Copy" -- If possible, work in the word "Now" or "TakeLessons Now" to the app icon (not strictly necessary) Some ideas of iconography that we've thrown around: - Having a camera lens or camera icon to denote it's video based (Instagram, Facetime, etc) - Text books, grad cap, pen/pencil and/or backpack to denote school/college based - Having "A+" grade somewhere to denote better grades Quick tips: - Focus on a unique shape - Keep a limited palete of colors. - Prefer not to use a photo - No text, except "Now" is an option - Be creative! We're a fan of solid color backgrounds with white icons (flat), but feel free to experiment. The text under the icon will be "TakeLessons" so the app icon needs to really convey what the app is for.
I know there is a lot in my content details, but simplicity in the app icon design is key. Please feel free to reach out with any preliminary direction, and I'll try to provide feedback. I'll attach our current brand logo as reference, or visit TakeLessons.com.

@faleksandar was a pleasure to work with. Great communication and very patient. Paid attention to the small details I was focusing on improving. This ultimately brought a 5-star design. Thank you again!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
