Update to Original Brief - 10/07/2015
We have reviewed our original brief to see if we have confused rather than inspire. The reason for this is because, so far, we are not getting what we had hoped for. Having said this, we also feel that a bit more detail from us, you will all be better equipped to deliver on our expectations.
We are noticing very similar design approaches to a number of the icon concepts that we listed. This is something that was not foreseen by us but it is something that we want to avoid. Therefore, we would kindly and respectfully advise all designers to not settle for conventional, established and accepted ideas but think outside of the box - especially for icons that fall into that 'standard and acceptable' way of doing things.
For example, every designer (9 in total) that has put forward designs has used a typical 'House' icon for 'Home'. Not one designer has attempted to 'do something different' but 'different' and 'unique' is exactly what we want to see from the calibre of designers in our contest.
We are not designers but you all are. We are looking to you all to take our simple words and messages and visualise them into a meaningful, hopefully never seen before icon set with a recognisable family style.
We want to create interest around the icons which in turn keeps people on our website and hopefully gets users clicking on the icons to see what content is beyond them. Does this mean that the icons must be obvious in their meaning or can they be more obscure? We have decided to open this up and give you all total freedom to not be bound by rules of any kind. Break the rules please!
Our Request
Can all designers please present their designs in black and white or grayscale and on a plain white background. We need this format so that we can take your icons and place them into our development website test pages. This helps us to see how your individual styles and ideas work in the environment they are intended. It also helps us to identify concerns and give better feedback.
Regional Tips to Help Solidify Icon Meanings
We are an International distributor of insect killing and repelling products, based in Jakarta, Indonesia. ASEAN territories are our primary target countries.
- South East Asia is a hot all year round
- Houses are designed to stay cool (we use cooling systems not heating)
- Indonesians use the heat of the sun to cleanse matrices, bedding etc.
Home Page - In Indonesia the 'Home' is all about large extended families living all together, from Great Grandparents to newly born members of the family, generation after generation. Its not just about the bricks that surround them. The city/town buildings themselves often have a flat roof design with open terrace.
Natural Products - Our natural products are made from the Neem tree.
Interactive - Our website 'Interactive' Area will include, Uploads, Downloads, Blog, Private Social Network, Lice busting/educational games. With regard the concept of interactivity, we do more than push a mouse around a screen. We see, we hear, we cause, effect, react.
Schools Programs (Anti-Lice Services) - checks for Head Lice on pupils and premises.
Sharing of Personal Belongings - Lice are spread through close body contact (selfies, helmet sharing etc).
Continuous Warmth - Head Lice hate heat - they die in temperatures over 60 degrees. (washing machines and tumble dryers are a good way to kill Head Lice. Don't show house-hold radiators or other internal home heating systems. We do not use them in Indonesia.
Close Body Contact - Lice are spread through close body contact (selfies, helmet sharing, bed sharing etc).

Nitpicking & Combing - Searching and removing lice eggs (nits) and using a special metal, long tooth comb for finding lice in hair.
Clean Environment - A clean home environment helps to stop lice reinfestation

Minimalistic, modern, slick, unique. We want the icons to support our website's friendly conversational approach. Their meaning needs to be obvious when unaccompanied by descriptive titles.
The icons need to be flexible enough to reduce down to a small (mobile device) size without the loss of image quality.
