Doko Labs got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
Design a Photo Sharing Game iOS App Icon and Logo!
Check out Doko Labs's Icon or button contest…
We are building an iPhone app that allows you to take pictures, upload to share with the world, and explore new and interesting places through a social gaming experience.
What's your vision?
We'd like you to design an iPhone app icon, as well as a logo-only layer that can be used on a website, that captures the essence of the app we are building. Some keywords to think about: photography, artistic, memorable, location, game, sharing, social, discovery, exploration. The latest designs are a blue-colored theme and a black-colored theme, so the app icon should contain the same blue or black and possibly other similar shades of those colors in a gradient or similar style. Here's what we've used so far for shades of blue: #25548a, #4bb8f0, #6098c7, and #3a83c2. For overall style we'd like for the app icon to be uncluttered, contain no text, be unique, and simple yet memorable. A clean and simple design with consistent UI elements throughout is the key. Some ideas we've had include a skyscraper / skyline, maps and geography, and a magnifying glass. Don't restrict yourself to these, but listing just as examples. Be as creative as you like; look to the reeder, Instagram, and Foursquare apps for style cues, as well as Gmail (iOS) and 500px or mailchimp.com on the web.
We would like the AI and PSD source files as well as the PNG files in the sizes specified by the Apple iOS Human Interface Guidelines , so that we can play around with different colors as well. 114x114, 1024x1024, 58x58, 57x57, 144x144, 72x72, 512x512, 50x50, 29x29 "For all images and icons, the PNG format is recommended (avoid using interlaced PNGs). The standard bit depth for icons and images is 24 bits (8 bits each for red, green, and blue), plus an 8-bit alpha channel." http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/userexperience/conceptual/mobilehig/IconsImages/IconsImages.html
