CyberTracker got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
CyberTracker Conservation Needs New Icons
Check out CyberTracker's Icon or button contest…
CyberTracker Conservation (http://cybertracker.org/) is a South African non-profit that strives to bring positive change to our planet by attempting to create a global environmental monitoring network. Since 1997, the organization has developed and distributed free software (called CyberTracker) that can be used on several devices - from handhelds to desktop computers - and that helps a wide array of people - from illiterate African animal trackers to search and rescue teams around the planet.
What's your vision?
What We Need We're looking for two icons to be designed for our flagship software, CyberTracker. First, we'd like a launcher icon for the Android version of the application. As the name suggests, a launcher icon is used to launch the app when it's tapped on by the user from the list of apps on the device. We'd like the icon to be delivered as a single vector graphics file in Adobe format. We'd also like the icon to be designed based on the following guidelines http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/icon_design_launcher.html Second, we'd like an icon for the Windows version of CyberTracker. This is the icon that people will associate with our program on a computer such as desktop or laptop. Here too we'd like the icon to be delivered as a single vector graphics file in Adobe format bearing in mind the guidelines presented here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa511280.aspx What We Have The attached pictures displaying a Bushman hunter are what are currently being used by our organization. While we would like a fresh look, we are also interested in brand continuity. The Bushman hunter has had some level of of media attention over the years. The hope is that when people see the new icon, they would recognize it as CyberTracker. To draw a parallel and give a concrete example: The WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) logo has always featured a panda but has changed over the years (even though WWF now does a lot more than just protect endangered species like pandas). Please refer to http://www.famouslogos.us/wwf-logo/ to get a sense of how the logos for WWF changed over the years but maintained the brand image of the organization. Our Ideas We want to have icons that don't dilute our brand. However, we're looking for something fresh that will energize the product as we move CyberTracker to a new platform (Android) and bring out the next version of the computer software on Windows as well.
We would like you to bear in mind that most of our users fall into these two categories. Namely, the scientific and research, and environment communities. So we'd like a serious / functional look for our icons (as opposed to a more light / playful theme).
