Itchy99 got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
App icon design for Guitar Charts Creator
Check out Itchy99's Icon or button contest…
Guitar Charts Creator is an iPad app that allows guitar players to create chord charts on the device.
What's your vision?
I need an iOS app icon designed. I currently have a pretty plain icon. I need something better that will catch the users eye, and lead to more downloads in the App Store. Having a decent icon is one of the few ways an app can improve it's position in the store rankings, so I'm keen to get something that looks good and will convert. The app itself is very minimalist, and it purposely has a very black/white look so the chord charts are easy for the user to see/read. I probably went too far in applying the same look to the current icon. For the new icon, I think a splash of color would help is stand out. The only other color I use in the app itself is a blue color, so that might be a good choice for the icon. As for design elements, using guitars or chords is probably the obvious thing to use. Personally I think having a chord icon is a better idea, because the app is more about creating chords than it is guitars. (it actually supports other instruments than just guitar). Current website has some screenshots of the app: http://www.guitarchartscreator.com App on the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/guitar-charts-creator/id497942050?mt=8
When you design the icon, do it at a large size. 1024*1024 is the largest size Apple wants I believe. I'm going to need to resize it for the different icon sizes that are needed in the app: 50*50, 100*100, 72*72, 144*144, 512*512, 57*57, 114*144 etc. I know that can have some challenges creating an icon that looks good at multiple resolutions, but do your best. I would like the icon to look nice on a retina screen, so do try and make sure you take advantage of the additional resolution. Ideally I'd like to get the original PSD / Illustrator file (or whatever program you use), so I can fiddle with it if I need to in the future. Make sure you also follow the guidelines apple has set out for icons: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/userexperience/conceptual/mobilehig/IconsImages/IconsImages.html Remember apple applies gloss, rounding etc to the icon, so take that into account. If your icon does not need that applied make sure you let me know.
