HARAMBEE MEANING AND HISTORY
The Swahili word “Harambee” refers to, pull together in the same direction.
Harambee (possibly noun or verb) - Translates as:
"A cooperative society or societies." or "Working together in unity."
The word “Harambee” was assimilated into the Swahili language from Hindi at the time of the building the Uganda Railway from Mombasa to Kampala. Indian labourers used the phrase Har Har Ambeh or Hail Ambeh - an exhortation to Ambeh the Hindu God of Strength - when performing difficult tasks that often required more than one person to be involved e.g. lifting heavy loads etc.
In Kiswahili, Harambee means “all for one”. It is the cry of fishermen as they drag their nets ashore. Everyone echoes this same word when a collective effort is made for the common good, such as helping a family in need, or the construction of a school or a church.
NAMIBIAN CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND
On the 5th of April 2016 President Hage Geingob of the Republic of Namibia announced the launch of the Government's new approach to accelerate development in defined priority areas called The Harambee Prosperity Plan.
The Harambee Prosperity Plan is based on five pillars, namely effective governance and service delivery; economic advancement; social progression; infrastructure development and international relations and cooperation. The Harambee logo symbolises restless unity and strength amongst Namibians of all backgrounds and cultures, and that the only way Namibia can have prosperity.
The expectations of the Harambee Plan are a more transparent Namibia; a high performance and citizen-centred culture of service delivery; significant reduction of poverty levels; a reputable and competitive vocational educational training system and a spirit of entrepreneurship and enterprise development. In addition, the plan has expectations of creating broader participation in the Namibian economy; improve access to service land, housing and sanitation; guarantee the energy supply as well as sufficient water for both human consumption and business activities.
According to the President,” Namibians have overcome tremendous historical obstacles in the past and through the Harambee Plan, he believes and is confident that Namibia will rise to the challenges of the present and those that will be encountered with in the future. This plan ushers Namibia into the era of Prosperity for all.” The Head of State believes with this practice translated into a country where no one dies of hunger, where citizens have access to decent housing and to basic amenities, such as safe drinking water, quality education, basic health services and a sustainable income to afford the basic necessities of life.
The most effective way to address poverty is through wealth creation, which is done by growing the economy in a sustainable inclusive manner and through the creation of decent employment opportunities.
