The Piercing of the Crown
J. Z. Pate
J. Z. Pate lives on a hobby farm in rural Virginia with a beautiful wife and dozens of kids. Don’t worry, most of them are of the goat variety. His human kids, however, put the spring in his step and the sparkle in his eye. He enjoys biking, canoeing, hiking, and rock climbing… and wrangling time enough to do those activities with his family.
“We are one. One militia, one unit, one purpose—to overthrow tyranny.” In an ancient land, harshly ruled by a distant king to the north, Gregor, an antisocial street vendor, and Ember, a volatile street fighter, join a young militia training for a daring journey. Their mission: kill the king and bring freedom to their impoverished land. A runaway slave from the north arrives and joins the militia as well, earning their trust. After hijacking one of the king’s ships and leaving its crew in their wake, the militia comes within striking distance—when secrets are discovered. With the true purpose of their mission unraveling, the slave’s identity in question, and allies uncertain, can freedom be forged?
Boys and girls, ages 12-16, who are in junior high and high school. I am primarily targeting kids from Christian families in the United States, but not exclusively.
Book cover type
I prefer a fairly simple, non-distracting background and a single, bold, captivating icon that is representative of the book on the front. My first thought for this icon is an enlarged view of a wooden longbow with the image of a lion head burned into the wood just above the handle (facing forward), and an arrow loaded on the bow aiming somewhat out of the cover toward the reader of the book. This a repetitive element found in the book. Other frequent elements include fire, a straight-bladed (non-magical) iron sword, a three-masted sailing ship, and poverty. I don't prefer all elements to be included, I am just inputting them for your consideration. The book is set in an ancient time, so an ancient feel in the artwork and fonts would be ideal. I have used Almendra on my title page, but I am not necessarily firm on that font. Also, I am not looking for any people/characters to be on this cover.
What to avoid
No People/characters No busy artwork (overloaded with images, shapes, or colors) This is not a dark fantasy, so nothing too dark.
