ceo@wildbp got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Work with us to create a winning medical textbook cover!

We publish study materials and textbooks for medical students with a focus on natural interventions (e.g. botanical medicine, nutrition, life style optimization, etc.)
What's your vision?
We are looking for a cover for our new urology textbook: Title: Natural Approach to Urology and Men’s Health. Author: Eric Yarnell, ND Exact dimensions of the book: 8.5” x 11” Minimum 1000 pages - will need to adjust spine dimension as exact page count becomes clear. This will be a full cover - back cover text details to be added later, in addition to ISBN numbers and bar codes. No photorealism, please. We are only interested in original illustrations. Our clients are predominately female naturopathic medical students and doctors, unconventional, intelligent, discerning, 20's - 40's, and into the natural/organic lifestyle but not hippies - these are very professional people. Most importantly, we are looking for a distinctive look for our textbook line, not just a one-off one cover.Successful cover candidates will have elements that allow for continuity throughout our line of textbooks, as with the O’Reilly book covers for example. The covers should suggest an overall graphic “look” that can augment both print and digital offerings (website, Facebook page, etc.) Organic imagery related to urology (kidneys, ureters, nephron, etc.) would work best. Abstract images work better than concrete images - please no clip art medical imagery, stethoscopes, caduceus, etc. Please also avoid obvious "nature" symbolism like hands with a plant in them, vines twined around a man's naughty bits, etc. Color scheme orientation should be organic, earthy, Tuscan e.g. green, yellow, orange, brown, maybe purple. Again, we are targeting a professional audience, so please keep this in mind. To help you with our orientation, here is our vision statement: "Our purpose is providing the interactive tools necessary for nurturing curiosity into the future of medicine." Please be mindful of the fonts you use in your design. We would like to avoid having to purchase the font files: http://designer.help.99designs.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1554799-what-fonts-can-i-use-in-a-design
1. This contest is open to US designers only. We are seeking not just a cover but the possibility of a relationship with one or more designers going forward. This opens up the possibility that even if you are not chosen as a winner, we may still be interested in your services. Our target area is also fairly technical, requiring excellent fluency and the ability to comprehend complex concepts in English. Finally, based on past experience, we prefer not to have to deal with the wacky legal structures that may or may not exists outside of our own wacky US one that at least makes sense to us. We understand this will limit our options and that is fine because what we are seeking in this contest is quality, not quantity. Less designers also allows us to provide you with higher quality, more timely feedback on your efforts. 2. This contest will be run as open and will not be changed to blind at any point in the contest. Our research indicates that initially the 99designs community was very excited about blind contests, but this has lessened over time. More than one platinum designer will no longer enter blind contests, for example. We understand that some designers like blind contests and others don't, and we respect that choice. We realize that plagiarism is a problem in open contests but it also seems that even more annoying to some designers is not being able to see if the CH knows what they are doing, has any taste in design, and/or is actually sticking with their brief. Also, blinding a contest apparently does not stop illegal copying. While we are not professional designers, if we see what we believe to be obvious plagiarism taking place, we will eliminate that designer. We have taken a position so that you can make an informed choice and so that you understand we are working hard to be respectful of your time and of your professional requirements. 3. At the beginning, we want to encourage a wide range of inputs and ideas, so we will not be providing much in the way of visual guidance. In later rounds, we may provide more graphical information such as our logo, etc. that may be helpful with modifications. In the last contest we ran, we provided what we now feel was too much information up front, which prematurely narrowed down the options and created an environment with a good deal of redundancy. We would like to avoid that in this contest and the perception that the book cover has to be slavishly wed to every graphical aspect of our website, logo, etc. or even to our own admittedly neophyte initial thoughts of what the best design for our book would be. Best of luck to each of you and thank you for working with us on this project.
