Whitney Hill writes adult sci-fi and fantasy from her adopted home of Durham, North Carolina. Her worlds feature the diversity she has lived as a biracial woman of color and former migrant to Europe’s political and financial capitals. She draws on these life experiences to write characters trying their best to find a place for themselves. Outside of writing, she enjoys hiking in North Carolina’s many beautiful state parks and learning about world mythology.
An urban fantasy novel set in Durham, North Carolina, featuring a private investigator who is a sylph (air elemental) in hiding.
Women, aged 25-54, USA/UK/Canada/Australia. They are also fans of Kim Harrison, Faith Hunter, Seanan McGuire, and the early Anita Blake books. They like kick-ass female protagonists, private investigators, mythology, and magic.
Book cover type
Paperback 5.5x8.25 inches and about 312 total pages. Would like to follow genre conventions and have the main character featured. She uses an 8-inch knife (like a Bowie knife) in the book, but mostly air elemental magic. Setting notes: The book takes place in winter - no snow, but any trees would be bare or evergreen (pine and holly). Takes place in Durham, North Carolina, with key scenes being in downtown Durham, Eno River State Park, an abandoned boathouse in Jordan Lake, and downtown Raleigh. Character notes: The main character looks something like this, with slightly darker skin: https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/fashionable-young-beautiful-african-american-woman-726588868 She's 25. Her eyes glow gold when she uses magic. Other notes: Other book covers I like from the genre: Shadowshaper (Daniel Jose Older), Ever After and American Demon (Kim Harrison), Spells & Ashes (Kim Richardson), Getting Wilde (Jenn Stark). This will be book 1 in a series, so the design should have series potential.
What to avoid
Please no pink or cursive/handwriting fonts. Should avoid the "magical academy" / YA look.
