The Path: Awakening
AJ Foster has loved writing for as long as he can remember. He started writing The Path when his son was born, and hasn’t stopped writing since. He lives in Oregon with his wife, son, and two amazing dogs.
The Path: Awakening, is about a young man who awakens to discover he has no memories. He is rescued from a prison by a girl named Nhara who is part of a magical order of women known as the Daughter’s of stone. It is the first in a series I am writing, about how he slowly finds out who he is and learns how to control is magic. The world has a ton of magic and gods in it. Here is the current blurb. Sheadon was a priest, and then the goddess he served killed him, or so he thought. He wakes up years later with no memory of who he is or what happened, just with the fact that he lost time, and a lot of it. Nhara is a Daughter of Stone. A powerful mage, on a quest to find a cure for her sister. She’s sent out on a pilgrimage to complete a rite of passage, but everything goes wrong. In the end she finds a young man, with no memory, but he holds magic that may be the key to what she has been seeking. Astrid and Landon are Chroniclers, priests who serve the gods. Dispatched by their order after a new Celestial Artifact was sensed. They are on a mission, to retreive the artifact before anyone else. However other factions have begun to move as well, seeking to find the power many thought lost. The gods and mortals have begun to move as an old power is born anew. Fate has cast her dice, and the battle for an ancient power thought lost has begun again.
Young adults on up.
Book cover type
I am thinking the front cover should have a forest type backdrop/setting. I would like Sheadon to be the main focus. Whether its of his back or face I don’t know for sure so we will see what you all come up with. He has green eyes, shaggy brown hair, and a thinner figure. Not skinny, but not overly muscular. He is round 20 years old, and was a priest though he has no memories of that and doesn’t dress like one. With the forest backdrop I would also like a white tower somewhere by itself reaching into the sky. The tower can be surrounded by a white wall but that is not necessary. The tower shouldn’t be the main focal point, that should be Sheadon. But it is where he was held and escaped from so its important to the overall story for this part of the book. I would like to show Sheadon taking the first step to awakening his power. When he does shadows like small wisps begin to rise from his skin over his whole body. I would also (I think and we’ll see what it looks like) like to have raven feathers raining down in the book. They’re symbolic of who he is and becoming, and in the final battle scene they are falling from the sky as hundreds of the birds fly about overhead. Their feathers begin to fall like a black rain. I am also not opposed to having Nhara on the cover. She is a Daughter of Stone, a young girl around 19, from a magical sect. She wears a grey robe and has hair that is red/coppery and very curly. It is usually unruly and all over the place. Her skin is paler, with freckles on her face and light brown eyes. She is a strong personality, not afraid to stand up for herself and fight when needed. Confident in who she is and who she is becoming. When she used her magic it is stone magic, and a soft green light often glows from her skin. I think Sheadon should be set in some sort of a pose that shows he is about to take action. Though he could look relaxed and confident too. If you put Nhara with him then they should be by each other. If you are really brave and want to put Astrid and Landon in there you can. Though they should be off in the distance and small. Astrid has blonde hair and often wears it in a pony tail. Landon has short dark hair and both wear the robes of a Chronicler which are colored dark red and blue. Hopefully that’s enough to start with.
What to avoid
Hard to say because I am not sure until I see things. Hopefully the details I have given are a good starting place but feel free to as for more if needed.
It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their book cover.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.

And then… they selected a winner!
Great design. Richi captured the story perfectly with the cover graphic. He was also very cooperative. The experience was a complete pleasure.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
