No One Must Know
I've always been interested in social history and fascinated by my grandfather's tales of our Devon family. When he died, I decided to research my family's past. NO ONE MUST KNOW is loosely based on my findings.
It is 1330 on a remote Devonshire estate, young and innocent Joan de Chiddleigh is struggling with her new status as Lady of the Manor. Lonely and neglected by her ambitious husband, Sir John, she strikes up a forbidden friendship with a kitchen maid called Annie. However, Annie is hiding a terrible dark secret. As their friendship deepens, Joan finds herself getting more and more entangled in a chain of lies that will divide her and Sir John, threaten the Chiddleigh estate and change lives forever. The story is about the division Richard creates between Lady Joan and Annie on the one side and Sir John on the other.
No One Must Know is an historical fiction book aimed at the adult commercial womens' genre.
Book cover type
No One Must Know is aimed at historical/womens' commercial readers. The final design will need to be formatted to Amazon's standards for paperback, 5" x 8" and KDP books. For this reason, I need 100% royalty-free assets and fonts. The design must reflect the period of medieval England in the 1300s. I should like the design to wrap front, spine and back. For an idea of the font see image 'A Tapestry of Treason'. The background could be of rolling moorland and I also like vellum as a background colour as it represents the period and maybe a faded map of Devon. I should like the cover to show the division in the family, something like Lady Joan and Annie on the left side looking to the right. On the right side, Sir John looking to the left. In between, Richard facing the readers. Richard is Lady Joan's son. Just my idea but I am very open to ideas. In the uploaded images I have put the Chiddleigh shield and clothing of the period. Characters: Lady Joan: Age: mid-20s Petite build Hair: long, thick wavy auburn Eyes: brown Height: around 5' Clothes: see image. The dress should be a bright colour with a jewel or gold cross worn around her neck. Could wear satin/fur-trimmed cloak. Annie Age: mid-20s Petite build Hair: long, straight, dark Eyes: dark brown Height: 5'2" Clothes: she's a peasant - see image. Dress plain grey, green or beige. No jewellery. She could wear a full-length linen apron around her waist and a plain woollen shawl. Annie becomes a healer, so maybe a basket over one arm. Sir John Age: late 20s/early 30s Slim athletic Hair: fair cut straight to the shoulders, central parting. Neatly trimmed, square-cut beard just below the chin. Eyes: cold grey Height: 5' 8" Clothes - see image. His belt should have a gold buckle and jewels. Bright colours. leather boots to the knee. Cloak - long full and fastened at the shoulder with a gold jewelled brooch. 'Beret' soft jat with an elaborate feather but please, no Robin Hood! Cold, amibitous, aloof character. Richard Age: 15 Short and stocky Hair: a mop of thick wavy black Eyes: dark brown Height: 4' 10" Clothes - loose bright coloured tunic to knee with a bejewelled belt. Bright coloured hose, knee-length leather boots. Very arrogant, defiant.
What to avoid
Avoid slushy romance-type imagery/design. No fantasy. No modern hairstyles and unnatural colours.
It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their book cover.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
wsue7F collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
The design fulfilled my brief perfectly in a dynamic, eye-catching way. DanteMasuri understood what I required, was very quick to respond to all amends. I would certainly use him again for Book 2.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
