Entertainment & The Arts
I'm a published author and am working with my brother on a series of books which we'll be calling seasons since we're writing it like a television series. The target audience will be 10-12 year old boys and also girls. The series is called Monster Hunter Academy. These will be short works of around 30,000 words or so. We are currently working on the outlines, and writing the books one at a time, but we won't publish them until we have five or so already written out. We are looking to buy a front ebook cover, and also a print cover, spine and back, but we want to see the styles that the artists come up with before the books are written. We want to buy the first cover for the first book in the series now, however, so that we can have an idea of the artistic impression the covers will leave with the readers. Because the first book isn't finished yet, we know that print PDF's won't be delivered until they are because of the Createspace printing sizes and pages numbers are needed, but of course these will still be paid for if your design is chosen. Also, if your design is chosen, and when it comes time to publish we would like minor changes made (for example, to the back blurb) we would be willing to pay for the time needed for that as well if required. Thank you
What's your vision?
I like the Percy Jackson covers, and my brother is prone to Goosebumps covers, and we were wondering if there could be a compromise between the two? Like giving us a Monster Hunter Academy Logo at the top with the title and author names somewhere below, while still giving the semi-serious tone to the books. The title of the first book is: How To Train Your Dachs Dragon Book One Season One Authors are Mandy Rosko and Mitch Rosko The protagonist is a 14 year old boy with short dark brown hair, wears jeans and likes to skateboard. His face doesn't even need to be shown. That's part of what I like about most of the Percy Jackson books is that the characters are always either turned around, or the cameras are panned out so far away that they look too small to make out any features. Hopefully will make part of the design easier. He is in a new school where, in the basement for a couple of hours out of the day, some of the kids go down to learn about hunting monsters like vampires, blobs, trolls, dragons. When he sleeps in during detention and finds himself in the school, he discovers that the library is on fire, and that there's a small Dachs Dragon hiding scared under a chair with burnt books and smoke all around. The creature is visibly scared as it looks up at him. I would like it if the first cover represented this scene, or is Archie first opened the door to the school basement and saw a dark and dank empty classroom, with drawings of dragon skeletons on the chalkboard, with crossbows, swords, and daggers hung on the brick wall, and a box on the teacher's desk that looked like something was trying to get out of it. As for what the dachs dragon looks like, it's a tiny dragon, somewhat fat, with scales and the body in the shape and size of a Dachshund, only a little chubbier: http://www.dogbehavioronline.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/dachshund.jpg If anyone were to look at this creature out of the corner of their eye, they would think it was a dog, and not notice the scales and long and sharp coming out of it's long mouth. It will have curled horns, kind of like the horns on a ram http://blog.ramtrucks.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Bighorn-Ram-Animal.jpg It will also have little bat wings in the middle of it's back. They look to be the size of regular bat wings, but the Dachs Dragon needs to flap them incredibly fast just to stay in the air. This particular dragon is meant to be kind of pathetic like that. When the wings are not in use, they are folded against its back. This little dragon is going to be the mascot of the team, and it would be great if it could be in the cover since we intend to put him or hide him somewhere in all the covers we will be commissioning. This particular little dragon breathes fire, or is supposed to, but it tends to fart the fire out, and has a small tail. The Dachs Dragon is meant to be the comic relief for the most part, but we would still like the tone and coloring of the books to have Percy Jackson-like colouring, with the Goosebumps type logo, only with a school in front with cobwebs and spiders and worms with holes filled with sharp teeth crawling around instead of slime or something.
We do not yet have a back blurb, so you can just put gibberish there if you want until we're ready to publish it. I have self published a couple of books and am working under contract for a small e-press, so I know I can write and finish these books. My brother and I are hoping to have the first book finished, but not ready to publish, in two months, so by then we should be giving the chosen artist the page count for the book at least for the PDF of the front, spine, and back cover. We want to look through potential designs now and see if anyone can give us what we would both love.
