A cover, spine, and back of the book. The cover will be used for the ebook cover. The winner will also get two one-on-one projects soon after this competition -- for the next two books in the trilogy.
The cover should be black and iconic, somewhat akin to the covers of the Hunger Games and Twilight books. It should be simple, clean, and modern (rather than gothic or ancient). The overall tone could hint at lurking danger with a note of optimism. Some subtle hint of futuristic technology (like the grey lines in the Hunger Games cover) could also be cool.
The font of "UNBOUND" should be large and pop--probably in white, all caps, and something unique and creative would be great. (One idea is to use an omega symbol for the second "U" in Unbound.) The words "He must be released for a little while" should appear in smaller font beneath "UNBOUND". The cover should also include "Book One of the Omega Trilogy" with "J.B. Simmons" underneath it at the bottom.
The iconic design should incorporate a portion of a dragon. But not a fantasy/storybook dragon. Instead, it should have ribbons of shadow and smoke coiling around its long, slender serpent form. The smoke from the cover of "Looking for Alaska" is a good example. The dragon has black skin and red eyes, but again, it should be more iconic/symbolic than real (so grey or white or yellow/gold might also work). Ideas for placement are the dragon symbol in the center of the cover, off to a side, or weaved through the title or the omega symbol in "UNBOUND".
Overall, I think the colors on the cover would be black, white, gray, and maybe some red or yellow/gold.
The text of the back blurb should be:
[centered]"He must be released for a little while.
But the one who sees doesn’t believe.
[justified text:]Elijah Goldsmith has nightmares he needs to ignore. Why would a rich kid from Manhattan dream three straight nights about a dragon and the destruction of St. Peter’s Basilica? He’s never even been to Rome.
It’s bad timing, too. He’s graduating soon and applying to be a spy in the International Security Agency. That’s where he meets Naomi. She’s the kind of girl who makes boys like Elijah want to share their secrets. Were they brought together to learn what his secrets mean? There’s more to their sparks than they think.
[centered:] This is 2066, the year the world ends."
SIZE: The book will be paperback, 5.25 X 8 inches, and the spine will be slightly thinner than 1 inch wide.
