Heroin and Recovery Memoir

John Francis Kelly III better known as Jack was born in Boston, MA and is a prominent voice in the recovery movement. After sustaining a hockey injury at the age of 15 Jack was prescribed opiate pain medicine which quickly spiraled into heroin addiction. After a long battle with heroin that eventually led to homelessness, Jack at age 22 entered recovery. During his recovery Jack got involved in the cut throat world of Boston politics and has served on advisor boards for MA Governor Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and was an elected delegate in 2008 for Barack Obama.
My 85,000-word novel, Sharp Needle, is an autobiography chronicling my addiction to heroin that is in the style of the movie Basketball Diaries with the hopeful tone of 8Mile. Specifically - Sharp Needle - is about my fall from prominent high school hockey player, which occurred because of sustaining a shoulder injury, just as the opiate epidemic began over 15 years ago -then becoming addicted to Opiate pain meds and eventually descending further into homeless heroin addict. It chronicles my downward spiral into addiction and subsequent recovery, ending with my political run for Boston City Council in 2013.
Book cover type
Don’t know yet
One thought was to have the image of one single poppy plant with the white milk oozing out of the bud and a needle subtly in the image (think of the needle on the bud maybe). I like the idea of a white background & keeping it simple. I would like to have a hockey stick on the front as well or something that would resemble the hockey element - a ripped jersey perhaps. Another thought was to just have the milk from the poppy plant dripping off the plant and going into the mouth of a young boy with a hockey stick by his side. Looking for a seductive (poppy plant), playful cover but I don't want it to come off dark. Thought of maybe incorporating the Boston Marathon colors (red, blue and white) but open to ideas.
What to avoid
stock art - I'd like an original design of the poppy.
