We want a book cover design (including spine and back) for a book we are writing:
Title: “The One Hour China Book”
Sub-Title: "Two Peking University Professors Explain All of China Business in Six Short Stories."
The audience for this book is the Western world (US, Europe). It is written for everyone – especially government officials, regular business people and really anyone who is interested. And it is especially for those that are interested in China business but don’t want to spend a lot of time reading big huge books on such a very big complicated subject.
Our book is different than the sea of China business books that have been published in two important ways (i.e., this is our selling point):
1) It is short. It is designed to read in one hour. It doesn’t take much time and explains everything you need to know. This is different than most China books which are huge. It does this by presenting China as 6 major business trends that are explained in 6 short stories about successful entrepreneurs.
2) It is written by two long-time China business experts. We both have 10-20 years of business consulting / advisory work on the ground in China. You can find our bios on the web (Jonathan Woetzel, Jeffrey Towson). So we are somewhat more credible than many of the China books that are published.
For the cover, we want a simple professional design. We want something that amplifies and illustrates our key selling points which are #1 a One Hour China Book and #2 by credible experts.
So ideally we want a symbol or an illustration that amplifies this main point.
I have attached a couple of draft ideas. They are not great. I think we can do better than a big 1. But the simplicity of the design is the right idea.
A couple of other things;
Illustrating or amplifying the One Hour china book selling point is the key thing we are looking for. A symbol or a logo. Or an illustration that shows this. We are likely going to do other one hour books on other subjects so that is important.
Also China should probably not be part of the symbol itself. So we can use it with other topics that aren’t China.
We don’t want the over-used China symbols. No pictures of landscapes or famous buildings. No dragons, No great wall. No Chinese flags. And no using the standard red and gold coloring. Chinese characters are ok. A simple map outline is ok.
No real idea about the back cover. We won't have any text there. Just quotes recommending the book. maybe we can put put our pics and bios on the back cover to push credibility? Not sure.
We can’t use pictures of Peking University or McKinsey &Co.
No black covers. No reason, Just don’t like them.
The one hour is the thing. We are trying to find a symbol or illustration for that. That is what makes us different from the thousands of China books out there. That is the simple message that should pop out in words and be amplified by symbol or picture or something. And maybe by color?
