Description: I’m looking for a book cover (front and back) for “The Prophecy” – the first book in a series in the Urban Fantasy genre. This is Book 1 of a series called “Saga of the Chosen”.
I would like a high resolution Kindle and e-Book cover. Also, since this book is part of a series, it would be nice to have a cover illustration theme that remains common for all the books in the series. The theme could be as simple as a color scheme that is repeated in all the books or something common (like an insignia etc) in the front or back cover design or anything else that your imagination can conjure up.
The story is a mix of fantasy and mystery in a contemporary urban setting sprinkled with a liberal dose of danger and some romance. This is a world full of Magicks – those with magic in their blood who call themselves the Chosen. The Chosen hide successfully amongst the humans who remain unaware of their existence as they have for centuries. The story is set in modern day San Francisco where a wizard named Tasia meets the local Pack of Shape-Shifters (Were-people) in unusual circumstances to eventually be accepted into their Pack. This stuns the Chosen world double-fold since Shape-Shifters tend to keep to themselves, avoiding contact even with other Chosen. And, the formidable Alpha who leads this Pack is well known for his intense dislike of wizards. The cover should reflect a sense of mystery and danger in an urban setting. It should include the title of the book (The Prophecy), the name of the author (Petra Landon) and the series it is part of (Saga of the Chosen). I would like the front cover to be dramatic and eye catching while giving a sense of deep secrets and an unfolding mystery slowly drawing the reader in.
Front Cover Illustration: Three incidents from the book have been described below that should help provide inspiration for the front cover illustration.
Incident One :: A pair of Shape-shifters come after Tasia. It is midnight and she’s on her way home in a shady and shabby neighborhood of the city. She is crossing a small alley that separates her apartment building from an abandoned warehouse with boarded up windows and graffiti on its walls when she realizes that she is being followed. The alley is tiny, dotted with dumpsters by the wall of the brick building and cars parked half on and half off the pavement that runs beside the warehouse across.
She conjures up a thin and wispy white mist using her magic, hoping to use it to escape her stalkers. She’s midway through the alley when she glances back, an expression of mingled fear and desperation on her face to see the silhouettes of two hulking males move unhurriedly towards her through the mist. She’s petite and slightly built with finely etched delicate features, about 5’ 2’’ with wavy dark brown hair to her shoulders and dusky skin. She has South American heritage and looks exotic with large expressive grey eyes. She’s dressed in a little black skirt, white shirt, dark stockings and serviceable flat black shoes - her uniform at the high end restaurant she works at. She has on a casual jacket to keep warm in the chill of a San Francisco evening.
Of the two men behind, one is huge and hairy with a shambling gait like that of a bear while the other is stockier and not as tall. She can only see silhouettes of them through the mist. There is something menacing in their unhurried stalking of her, knowing that she has nowhere to escape. The mist she has conjured up swirls about them, obscuring their vision of her but they can still smell her. There’s an overwhelming sense of danger for they have come to kill her. There’s also a sense of desperation in her for she cannot afford to reveals her true powers to them.
Incident Two :: This follows after Tasia has been rescued by the Pack from a powerful wizard who has kidnapped her. An amorphous army of Shape-Shifters surround the imposing building where she was held as the Alpha emerges with an unconscious Tasia in his arms. I imagine the building to be something in the style of the City Hall or Opera House in San Francisco. The Alpha is a tall, strong but leanly built man with piercing but cold gold-colored eyes and tawny hair with a hint of curl that is cropped short. He’s a good looking man but there’s no softness in him. His face is all sharp angles and mysterious shadows. He’s tough, dangerous, ruthless and instills fear in his Shape-Shifters and other Chosen. There’s a charisma about him that is obvious to the bystander but also a curious aura of detachment. Beside him is an enormous grey wolf with distinct blue-green eyes that have a decidedly human expression in them – he is a Shape-shifter in his beast form. A few silhouettes in human form can be seen behind this trio. The Shape-Shifters surrounding the building are eager in anticipation of a fight with the wizards. But there’s also a sense of occasion; an overwhelming sense of something momentous happening in their world. For the first time in their history, the notoriously inward-looking Shape-Shifters have come to the rescue of someone who’s not a Shape-Shifter.
I would also be fine with a similar scenario with the three (the Alpha, Tasia and the grey wolf) on a different landscape, perhaps a hill at night after the rescue without the trappings of the building and the Shape-shifter army surrounding it. These three characters are central to the story, so the sense of three very different people being drawn into a tentative alliance and the sense of occasion this suggests would work well too.
Incident Three :: This is when Tasia makes the fateful decision to help a Shape-shifter who has been imprisoned in a silver cage (silver is poisonous to his kind, so he cannot break free). She arrives after midnight once she is sure that everyone else has left the building, climbing a tree to get through a window on the third floor. There’s little light in the room except for the sliver of moonlight streaming in through the window as she half sits on the window sill to peer in. The room is large and devoid of furnishings except for the big cage. An enormous grey wolf lies imprisoned in the cage. It is clear that he’s injured but he sits up on his haunches when he sees her. The wolf’s eyes are bluish green with a distinct human intelligence in them. That is how she knows that he’s a Shape-Shifter in wolf form. The expression in the wolf’s eyes is eventually what convinces her to set the wolf free, even at great personal risk to herself.
Back Cover Illustration: I’d like the back cover to have the book description juxtaposed over some kind of background. This could even be something iconic of San Francisco like the Golden Gate bridge, the Bay Bridge or even Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower which appear quite often in the book. I’m adding the text of the Book Description below but would like the ability to edit the description later on. I would also like the option to use a slightly resized version of the background image used for the back cover as a banner for the web page to represent the book.
Tasia Armstrong is a very special Chosen. Forced by circumstances to conceal her powers from her brethren, she makes a fateful decision one night to assist an injured Shape-shifter. Suddenly Tasia finds herself forced out of the shadows, an unwitting pawn in the ongoing skirmish between the mysterious mercenaries encroaching on Pack turf and the local Shape-shifter Pack led by a formidable and dangerous Alpha Protector. Tasia is thrown into the deep end, forced to accept hospitality and protection from the unpredictable and aggressive Shape-shifters while grappling to deal with the enigmatic Alpha who holds his fractious Pack together with a ruthless hand on the reins.
When the Pack is asked to investigate a twenty-five year old mystery, Tasia’s special brand of magic proves essential to cracking the riddle. As an extraordinary coalition of Chosen dig deeper into the past, they begin to realize that grave danger threatens their world. Tasia is slowly drawn deeper into the investigation as a powerful wizard makes an audacious grab for power based on an old prophecy. As danger closes in on her from all sides, Tasia must decide who to trust with her safety and the dangerous secrets she guards.
