From Quantity to Number volume 1
Mark A. Sapirie
Mark teaches mathematics, physics, and Latin. Prior to teaching, Mark worked with the intellectual property and business litigation practices of several international law firms in Washington, DC and Miami. He graduated Order of the Coif from William & Mary Law School. Mark has an S.B. in Mathematics with Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned the Swiss Maturité Fédérale Scientifique while studying at the Collège Champittet in Lausanne, Switzerland.
This is a first course in mathematics. It is intended for home school students and parents and its priority is to develop concepts through reasoned discussion. We focus on the relatedness of concepts to feature the coherence of mathematical understanding. The main topic in this first set of two volumes is the idea of number. We show this as a rich and evolving idea. Beginning with our observation of discrete quantity all around us, we develop the idea of number as a representation of quantity approaching step by step the conception of number as element of the real number continuum, a crucial foundation for many domains of mathematics including Calculus. A pervasive subsidiary goal of the text is to prepare ideas that are helpful to more advanced mathematics. In this way young students can become familiar with these ideas. They also make discussions more interesting for students and teachers and are apt to motivate students to seek out more mathematics while providing a fertile foundation for creative thinking.

Book cover type
A classic look. We like, for example for reference, the Everyman Library Children's Classics cloth bound design. They have distinctive spines. This book is the first in a series and so we would like a distinctive spine that can be replicated for future volumes and will look good in a series on a book shelf. The book is intended to be used with children but the design should not be infantile. Nature theme. The book includes (for example) black and white hand drawn illustrations often based in a nature theme. A key theme of the book is to develop an evolving idea of number from discrete quantity to elements of the real number continuum. For dimensions, please see uploaded template from Lulu.com.
What to avoid
Avoid an infantile design (e.g., no cartoonish elements).
