Entertainment & The Arts
We sell books.
What's your vision?
We want the book cover itself to stand alone as a work of art. It should feature the planet Earth as an interesting object. The cover should not be weighed down by trying to convey the story of the book or trying to sell a certain genre. The cover should be clean and simple with good depth. It should be mostly white with accents of blue. It should feature the planet Earth, but not a realistic Earth. It should be a conceptual rendering of Earth. We like the simplicity of the latest cover for George Orwell’s “1984.” We also like the three-dimensional feel of “The Goldfinch.” Both have been uploaded. We like the concept of having it appear that a metal souvenir button is pinned to the cover of the book, with a picture of the Earth on it. The words “I VISITED” would be embossed in the edge of the button, as if it were a cheap souvenir, but the words wouldn’t be so distinct that they would interfere with the title of the book. PLEASE apply your own creativity to the project, though. We want to see your vision of an interesting and artistic cover, with simplicity, depth, and the planet Earth. The back of the book could feature a simple blue silhouette of cornstalks, a farmhouse, and a broadcast tower. It could also have a water tower that is twisted and bent, as if it had been hit by a tornado. The Front Cover should include the following words: Trespassers a novel Todd Wynn & Tim Wynn Tres•pass noun 1: a violation of moral or social ethics 2: an unlawful act committed on the person, property, or rights of another 3: an unauthorized visit to the planet Earth by an alien life-form ____________________ (note to designer: make sure a dot appears between “Tres” and “pass” as shown above, instead of a hyphen) The Back Cover should include the following words: When four alien visitors arrive on Earth and disappear into the cornfields of Indiana, it is Stewart Faulkner’s job to find them. Who they are, where they’re headed, and what’s important enough to make them jump from a moving spaceship are all questions that Stewart must uncover. And he will have to do it all while 1) training a new team member named Mindy—who is developing a crush on him; 2) flying under the radar of his boss to make sure he’s not removed from the case; and 3) staying one step ahead of a government agent named Karl Bruner, who is determined to expose the presence of aliens on Earth. ToddWynn.com TimWynn.com ___________________ The book will be 5 x 8. The estimated spine width is .925 inches. We do not have the exact page count yet, so the job will include making that final adjustment whenever we have the specific size of the spine (probably within a week). The book will be uploaded on CreateSpace and also produced as an eBook. The book will be released through Amazon Kindle; Kobo; iBooks; Barnes & Noble; and Smashwords. We will need Front Covers compatible with these outlets. We have included a file of the Front Cover, to give an idea of what we’re thinking, but these designs are rudimentary and unprofessional. We have uploaded a photo to be inserted on the Back Cover, which can be cropped as desired. Please insert, “Photo by Terra Yates" next to the photo.

And then… they selected a winner!
Sherwin's initial designs caught my eye immediately. Then his ability to modify and come up with the vision I had in mind really made his work stand out and become the winner in tough field of competitors. I'd easily use him again!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
