You Take Yourself With You
Clare Josa is an author, speaker and mentor to passionate world-changers. In this, her sixth book and first novel, she uses her expertise in psychology and human nature to take you on a journey through how we handle the brown stuff life tends to throw at us. As Sophie and Christof make choices driven by past fears and hurts, how does this affect their future? Will they find the courage to release them? And how might they be connected? Clare loves writing, running workshops that nourish your Soul and change your life, travelling to sunny places, and hanging out with her family at their home in Sussex, UK.
The core themes of this book are: * how we shut down and don't ask for help, hiding our stress and emotional pain from those we love * how we can't always change what is happening in life, but we CAN choose how to respond, which makes the difference between sinking into depression and handling it well * the way I want people to feel after reading the book is inspired and hopeful and curious about what comes next for the two main characters The title - You Take Yourself With You - is about how we can run away from our problems, but the reason the problems seemed so bad was because of how we reacted to them. Unless you change that, life repeats itself. Plot overview: When Christof's father dies in an accident that Christof survives, he's left with more than guilt. A mountain of hidden debt threatens to devastate the Italian cherry farm his family has called home for generations, leaving its workers destitute. Struggling to juggle the demands of a city job that wants him to put a mafia boss behind bars and the overwhelming responsibility of running the farm, Christof has never felt more alone, though he doesn't let anyone close enough to tell. Can he save the farm, beat the mafia and learn one of life's most important lessons, before it's too late? Sophie is brilliant at her job and on track to get promoted when her best friend and boss goes on maternity leave. When Sophie rejects her new boss's sexual advances, he sets out to destroy more than her career. Living in London with a narcissistic ex-boyfriend stalking her and her landlord making her homeless, can she escape from the black cloud that threatens to overwhelm her, to find the stability, happiness, success - and the love - she is secretly craving? If you enjoy contemporary fiction that goes beyond chick lit but doesn't give you nightmares, then you'll love You Take Yourself With You.
Imagine reading a story that could change your life? Set you free from negative thinking? Get you feeling positive and inspired? With no effort? That's what You Take Yourself With You is going to do. It's a full novel, NOT a self-help book, but by reading it, you'll learn - through the characters' journey - how to set yourself free from feeling like a victim and reclaim your power to choose where life takes you. It will be read by women & men aged 30+ who love to read at bedtime or on the train. They love a good story, they want more than chick lit, but don't want to be given nightmares.
Book cover type
I would love a cover that stands out with its simplicity, yet still somehow conveys the messages of hope and changing your life that are core to the story. I don't want a standard 'stock photo plus text' cover. That could be done by entry level designers and I have made this a 'gold' competition because I want a cover that makes people stop and pay attention to it - that stands out as an Amazon thumbnail or on a shelf in a bookstore - one designed by a professional who felt inspired. I am hoping to work with the winning designer on all six novels in this series. Please aim more for the abstract, rather than literal interpretation of the story. Many entries so far are just stock photos of cherries or cherry farms. They don't really convey the message of the book. Some look like self-help books. Some look like recipe books. If you love illustrations, something along those lines would be great. Please make sure the title is easy to read at thumbnail size. The book is for both men and women (my husband loved it). There is emotional tension in Sophie's relationship with her ex-boyfriend, who is stalking her, and her new boss, who is harassing her. She longs to settle down and be promoted, but has lost hope. She fears she will always be single and she believes she will soon lose her job. Christof is struggling with guilt over the death of his father in a car accident that he survived. He feels under pressure to give up a life he used to enjoy, but now realises he doesn't, but he also doesn't want to become a cherry farmer. He keeps his problems to himself and no one knows how unhappy he is. He is also suffering from PTSD after the crash. The Mafia (actually Camorra - Naples) involvement is a core part of the story, but it doesn't involve blood or guts or guns. It is more of an intellectual challenge as Christof has to collect evidence to trap them and stop their fraud from a client's business, as part of his job. Spoiler alert: Sophie and Christof don't meet until the final page of the book, so this is NOT a romance. If you need sample chapters to get a feel for the story, please let me know. I want the cover to pique curiosity and inspire hope. This is NOT a crime novel. It is NOT romance or chick lit. It's a story about how you can change your life by changing the way you look at things. ------------ Size: 13 x 20cm (most likely) Pages: 240 (tbc - currently with the editor) I would like to work with the same designer for all six, so the design needs to be something that can be adapted for future novels but still show readers they are related. Please could you also supply multi-layer PSD files for the final book, so I can use elements of the design for social media during the launch. You can see my other books here: http://www.clarejosa.com/clare-josa-books-cds/ These are all non-fiction. This brief is for my first novel, so the cover can be very different to these, if you're feeling inspired.
What to avoid
Just using stock photos with some text 'slapped' on them... There are too many of these in the market place and they all blend together. Please try to create something unique that won't end up in the 'lookalikes' section of Private Eye magazine! ;-) Also, please avoid the current cliche of a stock photo of a person with their back to the reader and a blurred background.
