The Blood Hymn
The Blood Hymn is a fantasy novel about forbidden magic and sacrifice. It's set in a fictional country with a long history of tyrannical blood mages, and even though they no longer rule, people are still terrified of blood magic. The protagonist, Esther, is a blood mage. In the beginning, Esther hides her magic to fit in but by the end, she realizes that it's worth using her forbidden magic to save people even if that means people no longer trust her. The main form her blood magic takes in this novel are her 'blood hymns,' which are 'bloody foretellings of someone's death.' When she hears her first one, she's immediately disowned and exiled from her noble family to avoid causing a scandal. The story revolves around her having to return to her former family because she hears a blood hymn about the royal heir and she's enlisted to protect them, putting her in harm's way.
It would be a mostly female audience from the uk/ us. The book has romance and royalty elements so it mostly appeals to fantasy/ romance readers who are drawn to stories featuring a romance between a female protagonist in her early twenties and a prince. As for age, it ticks a lot of boxes for being a YA novel and will be uploaded to sites with a large YA userbase, but since the characters are all in their early twenties, it also has a large appeal for readers in their twenties.
Dimensions: Annoyingly each website I'm planning to host the novel on each has a slightly different size ratio for their cover but most aren't far off from the standard 1000/1600 ratio. Font styles: Graphics design is not my forte so I'm afraid any suggestions on my part may not be suitable. I am more interested in a bold or gothic font over the calligraphy fonts but as long as the title is legible in the thumbnail (approx 100 pixels wide for the absolutely smallest thumbnail) I'm happy. Also, I am drawn to silver text but I'm not sure how well that will go with your vision, so feel free to improvise! Colour Scheme: Red is essential but I'll give you free rein to incorporate other colors. Esther's house colors are green and gold if that helps. Mood & Theme: One of the files I've attached is a sample of the covers this novel will be competing against to give you some idea of the general mood the cover should have. I'd prefer a more serious mood to reflect the constant danger Esther is in because of her magic. Style of Images: The most important theme to focus on for the cover is the 'mage' / 'blood mage' theme and the cover in my head revolves around three things: Esther dressed in red mages robes, bloody hands, and a bird sitting on her shoulder. Bloody hands are an important piece of symbolism in the novel (you can see I tried to depict this on the temporary cover I've been using). The protagonist (Esther) has light skin, dark brown hair and green eyes. As for her face shape etc, I'm not too fussed. I'd like for her to be dressed in traditional mages robes/ uniform with a red color scheme. Hoods and cowls seem to be popular in the genre if you feel like incorporating it. The bird is a species known as an 'ibiscular.' They are essentially a larger version of the northern bald ibis (I've included two pictures) but the skin on their face and legs has a stronger red hue and the feathers on the back of their neck are longer. Ibiscular are associated with blood magic and during the course of the story, Esther befriends a fledgling who often sits on her shoulder. I'm not sure how easy it will be to find a stock image or a northern bald ibis so see what you can find! If you want to incorporate any of the settings, there are two primary locations used: The royal court/ noble estates - most of the book takes place in the large estates of the nobility as well as the royal palace. These are modeled after traditional European castles and palaces. The deadlands - the 'savage' and magically afflicted woodlands connecting the estates they travel between. The deadlands play an important part in the novel and they're full of dangerous monsters and animals. So in summary for the imagery, the most important aspects are the mage uniform, the bloody hands and the bird on her shoulder/ in the air.
What to avoid
If you could avoid overly curly calligraphy that'd be great.
