We are a direct-to-consumer company that primarily sells health and beauty creams and supplements via mail order and the web. Our customers are mostly mature women (ages 50+) with a high school education and moderate to above average income.
What's your vision?
We want a front cover and spine designed for a new health book we’re publishing and offering for sale titled The Anti-Pain Plan. The book’s subtitle is “467 No-Nonsense Ways to Avoid Arthritis, Heal a Headache, Beat a Backache, Trounce Carpal Tunnel, Relieve Sore Joints, and MORE!” The cover tech specs are attached. The dimensions are 7⅛ inches wide by 9 inches tall. The spine is 1 inch wide by 9 inches tall. All copy, images, and other graphics must be at least ¼ inch from each edge, i.e., there must be a ¼-inch clear area around the outside edge of the cover. We will need the final files supplied as complete InDesign files, including all images (we are currently working with the Adobe Creative Cloud), and a pdf file. This book provides practical DIY pain remedies in a fast, fun, and easy-to-use format. The sections are separated by parts of the body, and chapters offer pain relievers for specific aches that commonly occur in each area. The section titles are: Pain in Your Head; Pain in Your Shoulders, Arms, and Hands; Pain in Your Chest; Pain in Your Back; Pain in Your Abdomen; Pain in Your Nether Regions; Pain in Your Legs and Feet; Pain in Your Skin; and Pain Anywhere (And Sometimes Everywhere). The book is written in non-narrative, problem-solution format with information provided in short individual paragraphs. There are a fair amount of interior graphics in the form of repeating sidebars. See the attached sample chapter for the layout and design. Because this book will be sold by direct mail and on the web (not retail), our customers will definitely “judge the book by its cover” when deciding to order it. So they have to be excited when they initially see it advertised, excited when they receive it in the mail, and excited when they read and use the how-to hints. So we’re looking for a bright, bold cover that grabs our customers’ attention and gets them excited about the experience. It must have a high perceived value while reflecting that the information inside is solid, credible and can be trusted. The cover must be 4/C and have a banner or the words “A Baker’s Best Health Book” at or near the top. There is to be no author listed. The title is obviously the most important and prominent element, with the subtitle secondary. Graphics and design elements should focus on interesting typography.
Remember, this is a do-it-yourself, how-to health and healthy living book. It’s not a novel or running narrative. So there’s no story to be reflected on the cover. And, in spite of the title, we want to steer clear of depicting dire pain or serious injury on the cover. We’d like to see designs that are fresh, clean (not cluttered) and have some personality to them. The book cover has to jump off of the page and the title has to really “pop” so that it’s easily readable and grabs the reader's attention. Be original and creative...the more designs we receive, the better. Thanks.
