The Couchsurfing Story
Casey Fenton is a serial entrepreneur who founded and raised $20M in venture capital for his Silicon Valley startup, Couchsurfing.com. He has a passion for building talented, diverse teams and bringing groundbreaking ideas to life. Casey used his background in computer science to create the original Couchsurfing, which launched in 2003. He served as executive director of Couchsurfing until 2012 and then founding chairman of the board, growing the community to over 15 million. Couchsurfing has become the world's largest travel community, enabling millions of people to explore the world and learn about each other. Casey was elected an Ashoka Fellow in 2010.
In The Couchsurfing Story, Casey Fenton teaches readers to pursue a non-traditional path, one guided by the pursuit of intense experiences, the extremes of life and the excitement of the unknown; to empower young entrepreneurs who are smart, driven, non-traditional thinkers. It is a guidebook that shares how to approach the world in a unique way, how to build things that people want to take part in and how to leverage nonconventional wisdom to lead others in exciting new directions. Casey gives readers a framework for exploring, and ultimately contributing to, the world as we understand it. At age 20, Casey took a cheap flight to Iceland and had no place to stay when he got there. Fully seized by the spirit of adventure and travel, having the time of his life, seeing the world, meeting people and experiencing life to the fullest, he had no interest in staying at some boring hotel. After hacking into the university database to randomly email 1,500 students and ask if he could stay with them, Casey received an avalanche of positive welcoming responses. This was a breakthrough moment for Casey, causing him to question conventional wisdom about consumer behavior and led to a lifelong search for answers. This book is a distillation of this philosophy and a call-to-arms to fellow explorers and non-traditional thinkers to embrace a different path to success.
In his exciting publishing debut, Casey Fenton speaks to a diverse audience of fellow life-travelers, freaks and adventurers, the next generation of social entrepreneurs, who are poised to build a new world, through the latest technologies and innovations, but who are drawn, like the author, toward the road less taken. For everyone who has a curiosity about the world and wants to understand themselves better in relation to it.
