rickmanelius got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Design a book cover for Winning The Lottery Within!
Check out rickmanelius's Book cover contest…
The goal of the book (Winning the Lottery Within) is to help people realize that their power of choice is the single biggest influence in whether they will achieve success (however they define it) and fulfillment in their lives. There are two target audiences: 1) Primary: Students in their high school and college years that are trying to find themselves and break free from the limitations placed upon them (either by themselves or society at large). 2) Additional: Any individual that feels stuck and yet yearns to transform their life but either doesn't think it's possible or doesn't know where to get started.
What's your vision?
About Me: I've been in the web development space for 7 years and now lead a company of 55 in Denver, Colorado. I decided to go outside of my agency to not have any conflicts of interest on this project. I'm merely stating this up front so that anyone participating in this contest doesn't need to beat around the bush. I would prefer frank honesty and direct questions if anything doesn't make sense. I will also do my best to not give vague direction or feedback. Beyond the Book Cover Objectives: For me, the book is a foot in the door to a larger series of interactions with the audience. For those that don't know me, the cover is going to be my first (and potentially only) impression with someone that I could potentially help change their life forever. For those that find the cover compelling enough to proceed, I want to maintain that experience throughout the other touch points of interaction: within the book itself, on the website, on social media, in the newsletter, etc. If ultimately it would be more appropriate to select a different package type to account for these different endpoints, I'm happy to contact 99designs to discuss an optimal contest arrangement and payment. I'm merely stating this up front because I fully intend this cover to appear on the website itself and pull elements from it into these other areas. Ultimately, this could be as comprehensive as a website style guide (e.g. fonts, sizing, color palette, etc) and/or a logo (essentially mirroring the look and feel of the book cover). Book Cover Objectives: There are a few overlapping themes of the book, but the overarching one being conveyed is that our innate power, passion, perspective, and purpose is within us and not out there in external factors that we can't control (e.g. if I win the lottery, if I was born with money, if I was born with the right DNA, etc). I summarize it in chapter 1 as follows: 1. You are the author of your story. 2. Your decisions are more important than your DNA in determining your destiny. My goal of the book cover is to symbolically represent the concept of our innate power being within. Required Components of the Book Cover The following elements must appear in some way on the cover. * Title: Winning the Lottery Within * Subtitle: Perpetually Uncover Your Innate Power, Passion, Perspective, and Purpose * Byline: Rick Manelius, PhD Here's some additional background behind why certain words were chosen: 1. The word "Lottery" is a metaphor and not meant to be literal. Most people pin their future and dreams on "winning the lottery" and other rare chance events when they have much better odds focusing on what they can control. 2. I picked "winning" and "Perpetually" to emphasize this is an ongoing process and not something you just achieve once and you're done (e.g. life is a journey, not a destination). 3. "Innate" because we are all born with these gifts, whether we realize or perceive them as such. 4. "Power, Passion, Perspective, and Purpose" reflect the 4 levels of being (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual). Additional Requirements and Areas of Flexibility * My goal is to not to appeal to "get rich quick" or "silver bullet" folks that solely want to get gobs of money without any effort. Therefore, I would like to steer clear of using representations of money as a focus, but I'm open to if it's balanced with symbols/representations of other areas of life (e.g. relationships, hobbies, health, etc.). * Flexibility on Colors: I'm open to your suggestions/expertise. My thinking keeps pushing me towards colors that represent truth (blue) or transformation (purple), but if you feel inspired to take a completely different direction, I'm willing to go with it. * Flexibility on Fonts: Same as colors. My inclination is to go with a strong sans serif, but if you have a compelling direction, go with it. * Requirements on Flexibility on Imagery/Photography/Illustrations. Unless there is a strong case made to include no visual elements on the cover, I would prefer to have some image/photography/illustration. I'm 100% flexible on what version (or combination) you would think best supports the goals of this project. * Beyond Book Considerations: Given the goal is to pull from this cover into different endpoints (website, newsletter, social media), anything that can more easily translate over would be preferred but is not a hard requirement if this prevents the cover from standing out. A Sample Concept The is one idea that I came up with. Unfortunately, I'm now anchored on it and it's hard for me to think of additional concepts, hence the reason for reaching out to 99designs to explore additional concepts. That said, I would be perfectly happy if this concept was executed correctly. Waste to neck photo of a shirt being ripped open (https://www.google.com/search?q=superman+ripping+shirt&espv=2&biw=1242&bih=703&site=webhp&tbm=isch&imgil=Po6IG2L2d3aiFM%253A%253BXwQAp_uXz0tqfM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.myteespot.com%25252Fshop%25252F%25253Ftarget%2525253Dproduct%25252526product_id%2525253D17167&source=iu&pf=m&fir=Po6IG2L2d3aiFM%253A%252CXwQAp_uXz0tqfM%252C_&usg=__cq7YuzbtDnwW41OvVDs9CILHX3E%3D&ved=0ahUKEwjAtdLspP3OAhXFSSYKHRUtAwgQyjcIKQ&ei=KQzQV4D9H8WTmQGV2oxA#imgrc=Po6IG2L2d3aiFM%3A). Instead of a Superman S, a vortex spiraling inward (https://www.google.com/search?q=superman+ripping+shirt&espv=2&biw=1242&bih=703&site=webhp&tbm=isch&imgil=Po6IG2L2d3aiFM%253A%253BXwQAp_uXz0tqfM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.myteespot.com%25252Fshop%25252F%25253Ftarget%2525253Dproduct%25252526product_id%2525253D17167&source=iu&pf=m&fir=Po6IG2L2d3aiFM%253A%252CXwQAp_uXz0tqfM%252C_&usg=__cq7YuzbtDnwW41OvVDs9CILHX3E%3D&ved=0ahUKEwjAtdLspP3OAhXFSSYKHRUtAwgQyjcIKQ&ei=KQzQV4D9H8WTmQGV2oxA#tbm=isch&q=vortex&imgrc=pehWM3K7SsXKpM%3A). At the center, inner power being discovered (see victory pose here http://www.learningstrategies.com/Resets/Home.asp). One caveat on this. The goal is to not show the original person as being superman. That only reinforces the fact that one needs to be born with that quality. If anything, it would be more powerful if the person ripping their outside shirt off was an average man/woman and we all access the strong, victory pose aspect of us inside. Another variation of this concept might be a representation of a slot machine or the dial of a safe at the center. I hope I haven't provided too much detail and/or restrictions. I'm trying to provide enough to get a strong start without so much that you don't have the flexibility to tackle this in a unique way. Ultimately, I will be just has happy as a completely unique concept as I would be if you take this concept and refine it to something that a reader would be compelled to open the book and start reading the table of contents.
I feel like providing anything else at this point would be counter-productive, but please do not hesitate to ask questions! My work days are pretty hectic, so I may not get back to you until after business hours. However, I will make sure I provide feedback as quickly as I can.
