“…God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment” —2 Peter 2:4 It started with a missing persons report. Three boys entered the woods. Only one came out. When asked by police what happened to his friends, the shivering child said a “Night Light” appeared and “took them away.” When asked “away to where?” he answered: “To Hell.” Laura, a naive scientist, journeys to find out what this “Night Light” is. She thinks she already knows, but, as she investigates the strange circumstances surrounding the mysterious phenomenon, she realizes: she’s dealing with something not of this world. What follows is a whirlwind of cosmic horror and paranoia for Laura, as the research forces her to confront increasingly deep and disturbing questions: Are we truly alone? Do realms exist beyond ours? Are there limits to what science can know? …Is Hell real?

Book cover type
I want an illustration of a deep, dark, thick forest at night, where black trees and shadows are covering most of the cover, making the cover almost entirely black except for an opening in the black trees centered in the front cover, where a red beam of light can be seen shining down from somewhere out of frame above, (think an invisible alien spaceship floating somewhere out of frame above is shining a red beam of light down), and the black silhouette of a boy within the red beam of light being enveloped and taken up/abducted. Optional: include his two friends, both little boys as well, watching in horror or trying to run away. Red and black are the main colors.
What to avoid
I know some of the reference images I provided include the color blue, but try to stay away from using blue colors and just stick with black and red, as well as gradations of those two like brighter reds, white and grays.
It all began with a design brief.

Nanjar is a wonderful designer. Not only is he very creative but he is also extremely patient and goes "above and beyond" to try and please. My project required a fair amount of adjusting of the various images but nothing I needed him to do was ever too much for him - he was more than willing to try and find a solution and always came up with a good one! This is the second book cover he has done for me and I have already put him on notice that I will be asking him to do the next one!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
