Looking for an ebook cover for a fantasy romance novel. Something cool and tasteful (no mostly-nude bodies entwined on the front, please :D).
Title: Balanced on the Blade's Edge
Author: Lindsay Buroker
It's borderline steampunk and can have that vibe... or not. I'm open. Just looking for something that says this is a fantasy adventure and a love story as well. The heroine is a sorceress. The hero is a pilot of a "dragon flier," a bronze steampunk version of a WWI fighter plane.
The setting of the story was inspired by my trip to Telluride, so something that suggests winter in some big ol' craggy/snowy mountains like those would be cool.
I'm including a blurb to give you some ideas:
Colonel "Ridge" Zirkander isn't the model of military professionalism--he has a tendency to tell superior officers exactly what's on his mind and his record has enough demerits to wallpaper the hull of an airship--but as the best fighter pilot in the Iskandian army, he's used to a little leniency from those his chain of command. Until he punches the wrong diplomat in the nose and finds himself issued new orders: Take command of a remote prison mine in the inhospitable Ice Blades mountains. Ridge has never commanded anything larger than a flier squadron--what is he supposed to do with a frozen fortress full of murderers and rapists? Not to mention the strange woman that shows up right before he arrives...
Sardelle Terushan wakes from three hundred years in a mage stasis shelter, only to realize that she is the last of the Referatu, the sorcerers and healers who once helped protect Iskandia from conquerers. The mountain that housed their subterranean community was blown up in a treacherous sneak attack by soldiers who feared the sorcerers' power. Everyone Sardelle ever knew is dead, and the sentient soulblade she has been bonded to since her youth is buried in the core of the mountain, too far for her to reach even with magic. Worse, the mountain that was once her home has been infested by bloodthirsty miners commanded by the descendants of the very soldiers who destroyed her people.
Examples of a couple of covers I like (not necessarily fantasy romance, but I hope they will give you an idea of what I dig):
Update: I'm definitely open to illustrated covers, and I've updated this to add an example of one that was done for another book of mine that I liked a lot (last link). Thanks!
Update with more details:
I've attached a couple of pictures of steampunk airplanes to give you ideas. Nothing like this ever existed in our world, so it can definitely be made up. :)
Character descriptions (both Caucasian/white for skin coloring):
Hero: Age 40, short brown hair, tall and lean, brown eyes, a scar on his chin.
Heroine: Age 34, long black hair, pale blue eyes, and a few freckles on her nose and cheeks.
Both of these characters get to kick some butt in the story (in the end, she finds her magical sword and is fighting a shaman, and the hero is flying to take down an airship).
