Hi! The title is: The Last Man on Earth The subtitle is: A Lonely Battle Against OCD I’ve written a memoir on living with OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It’s also about living with solipsism syndrome, a state of mind where you don’t think the world around you is real (think Matrix, living in a dream, etc). It's a memoir that's dark, twisted and at the same time hopeful. I've attached the synopsis as a document so you can find out what the book is about in more detail, otherwise the short version is: I had a breakdown in 2008 and started to believe the world wasn’t real (solipsism syndrome). I thought our reality was a computer simulation. This then revived my OCD (I had it a couple of years before), where I would act on obsessions and carry out repetitive and bizarre actions. Thinking I could control the reality I lived in, the two illnesses mixed and I started doing repetitive actions to snap back to “the real world”. Over 3 years I dropped out of university twice, lost a lot of weight, spent my 20th birthday in a hospital and thought I had separated myself from reality and my family. At different points I thought I was the subject of a mad scientist’s experiment (see: brain in a vat wikipedia entry); that I was being possessed by a demon (see: evil demon wikipedia entry) and that I was permanently dreaming, unable to wake up. After a lot of hard work and therapy and a revelation, I made a strong recovery and started to get my life on track. This book is how I got there. The target audience I'm aiming to distribute it to will be other sufferers of OCD, their loved ones and people interested in the illness. This is my audience because I want to give those sufferers hope that they can turn their life around.
What's your vision?
I LOVE Minimalist illustrations and drawings. There are certain themes and events which could be good to include in the cover. If you feel you have a good design though that’s relevant and not mentioned here, please take your initiative! :) These are the themes I think are important to be included in the cover. You don’t have to include all of them! -The world not being real. One big theme of the book is thinking that reality is fake. Originally I thought I lived in a computer simulation like the Matrix. Soon I was scared of an all powerful demon taking me over, who would trick me into living in an alternate reality. Then I feared I was living in a dreamworld and being separated from family and friends. If this sounds weird to you then I appreciate that. I’m aware it can be hard to understand solipsism and below are links explaining what I believed. This is one of the fundamental themes of the book. - People not being real. For ages I thought that the people around me were either hallucinations, part of a dream or AI robots in a computer program. I thought I was the only conscious being in my reality and this was a huge fear of mine. See the link below about philosophical zombies for more information. -OCD/Obsessive Compulsive Disorder -Isolation: I thought I was separated from my loved ones because of my beliefs. Whether that was thinking I was living in a computer simulation, being a brain-in-a-vat, being possessed by a demon or thinking I was permanently dreaming, I felt lost from family and friends. I was constantly feeling lonely and on my own. These are some links which describe what I believed: - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_in_a_vat - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil_demon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solipsism_syndrome - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophical_zombie This gives a description of OCD, the illness that I suffered from: - http://www.ocduk.org/ocd
