sass.e.nicholson got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Create a book cover for an evolutionary history of women
Check out sass.e.nicholson's Book cover contest…
The story of human evolution we've been told is one built on the shoulders of male heroism, competition and dominance: but, what if it isn't the whole story? This book is the story of women's evolution. It traces women's rich contribution to human evolutionary history alongside the conditions of her oppression, and looks towards a future that integrates women's past wisdom with the full spectrum of present and future possibilities.
What's your vision?
I want a cover that evokes a relationship between the women's (ancient) history and a bright possible future. Some of the core themes of the book are women in mythology, feminism and spirituality. I'm looking for a well integrated cover deign that is symbolic, intelligent and elegant. The audience for this book is an intelligent general public. The design should not be fun, comic or girly. No modern photographs of women, please. With the cover of "The Evolutionary Journey of woman", as well as invoking a beautiful mythological vision of woman (from the past), I am wanting to symbolically invoke the idea that woman in the present (and future) is fully integrated in all domains - she is spiritual, intellectual, psychological, technological, embodied. Here are a few relevant book cover designs that I like : https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1053732.Emilie_Du_Chatelet https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/464519.A_Bed_of_Red_Flowers https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6651004-our-lady-of-guadalupe Here are some images you could try working with: http://uploads5.wikipaintings.org/images/theo-van-rysselberghe/woman-at-a-mirror-1907.jpg http://goddessinspired.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/inanna-descent.jpg Here are some examples of symbolic images of the future that could be paired with part of an image of a woman. These are just ideas (I'm not a designer!) and I am very open to better creative interpretations : http://www.agencypost.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/shutterstock_106480619.jpg http://www.development.tas.gov.au/__data/assets/image/0014/35150/innovation_banner.jpg http://scienceillustrated.com.au/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/digital-brain.gif http://www.alaress.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/digital.png Some other ideas to draw on for "future" (I wouldn't want to use these images literally - I just like the lines and expanding spheres as a point for inspiration) http://in.integralinstitute.org/avantgarde/self/i/AQAL_Collage.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VoPHIct2xww/Tr165B99wHI/AAAAAAAAARE/imwM6vDs4xY/s1600/Wilber%2527s%2BAQAL%2BModel.jpg
***This competition will be guaranteed after the first round** The cover should have the title " The evolutionary journey of woman: from the Goddess to Integral feminism" and my name Dr Sarah Nicholson. The spine will have a truncated version of the title "The evolutionary journey of woman" and my name. The back cover will have a book abstract, some endorsements and an author photo and bio. It also needs space for the ISBN and the publishers logo. I will supply all of these. I have attached two mockups. They are a bit too "busy" but give some idea of symbolic ways to evoke women in history/mythology and a bright future.
