What's your vision?

A 6x9 Book Cover (and Back Cover) for a new book titled "Considering Jesus" - The cover needs to be 6w and 9h. High resolution (300 DPI+) - We are looking for a modern, clean looking design.

The Brief

This book is based upon the premise that there are two fundamental requirements for life to have genuine meaning and purpose—the existence of the Divine and the possibility of immortality. In Part One, we will look at the three most common reasons why people reject the concept of God (or gods), which are: Science, Evolution, and Evil. In Part Two, we will look at the Christian narrative concerning the existence of God, the condition of mankind, and the possibility of immortality. The author’s goal is that the reader will see that your life does have genuine meaning and purpose because the Divine is real, immortality is available, and one of most important things you may ever do with your life is Considering Jesus.

This book cover was designed for a spiritual fiction. The author had already in mind a specific scene described in the first chapter. To follow the writing, the angel needed to have an etheric appearance, while the little girl had to be seen as being “more real”. Although there were already some references regarding the appearance of the characters, I had some freedom to “create” them in a way that could be interesting for the viewers, adding some details. The atmosphere that surrounds them was also a very important aspect of the entire design, with the sunlight that comes through the trees. The mist was already part of the image chosen for the background, but the colors and contrasts had to be completely changed in order to make the whole imagery balanced and believable. One of the other details requested by the author was to give a big impact to the main title “44”. The effects and colors helped to make it stand out and, at the same time, to match the rest of the design.

The client asked for a design that needs to have a longstanding appeal and a 'timeless' quality. By using the Arabic pattern with a gold gradient on clean white background - design got all that author wants.

Since this is a devotion book for those who want to deepen their relationship with God in the middle of their hectic lives, the author requested a design that could capture the essence of time and of spiritual reflection. For that, I included the image of a pocket watch, similar to the one that was being used as a chapter symbol in the interior of the book. This way there is always a consistent theme and imagery in the entire book (in the inner and outer zones). I also wanted to represent the “start of a new day”, not only in a sense of time but also as a new opportunity to be with God, that can be achieved despite the busy life. The rising sun was a good way to transmit that message and also to give it that “eternal” sense (the sun rises everyday… no matter what). It also helps to give a very positive feeling to the entire design, as being a joyful invitation to join in these daily 100 Minutes of reflection.

In order to make the connection with Book 1, 100 Minutes with God, I kept the same title design. Although the covers are different, this approach helps readers to see the two books as a “collection” rather than as a “standalone”. Regarding the concept, I followed the author’s suggestion of an hourglass to represent time. I placed it as if it were rising from the water or floating on its surface. The seascape with the sunlight gives a great depth to the book cover, but the main reason I chose it is because it conveys peace and a sense of hope. The entire image invites the reader to moments of meditation and devotion… always in a positive way. The flight of the seagulls, which seems to create a growing line of movement extending from the back cover, represents the evolution and personal growth that these minutes of daily reflection can help to achieve.
