We are launching a book to aid those adults in difficult life situations overcome their stress by means of mindful philosophies and practices. I use scientific and psychoanalytic theory references combined with my own personal experience of insight meditation and Buddhism in overcoming addiction and difficulties. Self-help by means of forming new perspectives of one's current dilemma through acceptance and understanding to achieve freedom. The target audience are those intrigued by the mindfulness revolution in the U.S., people who are curious about Buddhism and its perspectives on recovery and/or potential addicts/substance abusers. Probably adolescent to upper middle-aged liberal minded people.

Book Title: Awareness MODE A Mindful Approach to Overcoming Life's Difficulties The concept of Awareness MODE uses buddhist philosophies but should be seen as secular, not religious. Metaphor, personal experience/hardship (addiction), creative writing, neuroscience and psychology are all factors. M.O.D.E. is an acronym used twice in the book to describe overcoming difficulties by means of shifting perspective of one's own experience. (I like the yellow/black stenciled image attached here) A fictitious formula is also used "V over D equals A times W squared" in use for a method of motivation in recovery or overcoming difficulties. (see photo) There are recommendations and instructive techniques to be acquired. The book should feel like the reader has found the answer to all their unanswered questions about why life feels so hard and provide them with a new paradigm. Scientist meets Buddhist at a heavy metal concert and they talk philosophy, psychology and recovery. I want the book to pop off the shelf. I have a bold writing style that will grab an audience once a few paragraphs are read, so getting it into as many hands as possible is key. As my first book, I am more interested in getting my titles and name out there as a launching platform for others to come. I plan to market on Amazon / Kindle. I would like to offer it as an ebook then move to paperback (possibly in concert) The book will be about 5" x 8" and 3/8"-1/2" thick binding. I like books with a black/dark binding with white/light colored titles in bold. Some key points, perhaps for the back cover: "Become a conscious observer, rather than a servant of your thoughts and emotions" "Learn to choose your response instead of living with your impulsive reactions" "Come to know and respect your demons as your teachers" (I would like the freedom to add/edit this area) UPDATE FOR FINALISTS: BACK COVER “Become a conscious observer, rather than a servant of your thoughts and emotions” “Learn to choose your response instead of living with your impulsive reactions” “Come to know and respect your demons as your teachers”. “A mindful approach to overcoming life’s difficulties” We’ve all heard that trying the same thing over and over again expecting different results is the definition of insanity. What if you didn’t even know you were trying the same thing over and over again? Or the results you expected weren’t going to fix the problem in the first place? In Awareness MODE, I offer you a game-changer, a potentially radical shift of perception. More important than finding the answers, what you will find here are the right questions. (You’re already holding the answers). Gritty tales from the road of hard knocks combined with wisdom from our greatest thinkers inspire theories and philosophy of spiritual and scientific curiosity. Through colorful metaphor, provocative humor, and unconventional, insightful mindfulness techniques, you will come to know the path of least resistance on your own journey. Enjoy! About Jeff: Not your typical Buddhist author, Jeff is a generation X, hardcore rock and roll construction worker with a heart and mind full of Dharma and a desire to spread the love. Introduced to Buddhism at a young age, he found that the teachings of the Buddha informed many of his ideals in recovering from a life of alcoholism and drug addiction. This spiritual antihero now finds his passion in working with others who are struggling for freedom through facilitating mindfulness based support groups, guiding meditation and mentoring individuals. A native of the northern California coast, Jeff's work is inspired by the natural rugged beauty of his home terrain.
I have a blog at www.pavlostog.com The pictures included here are for inspiration/direction only, not as design ideas. and Here's an excerpt from the book: Once I sobered up, it was like those scenes in movies where someone plunges their car into the ocean and they’re trapped, freaking out, until they realize that they have to open the window and let that flood of water kick their ass as it fills the car so they can swim out to safety. Maybe you’ve had a similar experience. Or maybe you’re still sitting in that car, terrified, as it sinks. Or maybe you’re still on solid ground, but you’re speeding toward the edge. One way or another, it seems to me there’s only one way out, one way to survive. Face the truth of what needs to be done. Sometimes there’s a little bravery and maybe good thrashing involved. Whether you believe that the water pouring in comes from Buddha, Jesus, Allah or the Flying Spaghetti Monster makes no difference to me. As you’ll see, staying open, and even a bit ambivalent, about spiritual beliefs has really only contributed to my own freedom and happiness. The concept of looking toward and deeply into MODE for refuge may have come from Buddhist philosophy by my interpretation and regular formal mindful meditation practice, which I highly recommend developing and will offer suggestions later on, but this is not necessarily a suggestion of how to come in to the light of new perception. In fact, we can leave the whole spirituality thing out of it and come to an agreement with our thoughts of defeat by little more than keeping an open or "Beginner's Mind".
