What's your vision?
This assignment is for 3 images – 2 component images and a final combination of them. The final combination will be used for the book cover for the novel “Devil Music”. This is a fantasy novel set in 1980s Los Angeles, California, USA which focuses on the fictional hair metal rock band Pseudomantis. *** Technical Requirements *** All root files (e.g. Photoshop PSDs) are needed as part of the final submission. The final image must be a 6”x9” transparent PNG at 300dpi. The cover itself will be handled (not your responsibility and not part of this assignment) later when the back and spine text is determined. It would be ideal if the first component image (pentagram) was a vector graphic for future scalability/reusability, but I don’t know how hard that is or whether that is realistic. Look at the attached images for additional clarification of the two component images. *** Art Description *** The first image is a red pentagram with the star’s points exactly touching the circle (perfect circle and perfect star, as opposed to any elongation). There are unique symbols, also red, inscribed centrally inside each of the five star points, each taking up around a third of the space of the star’s triangle it is located in. The five symbols, *in order*, are: a) a scribbled-out symbol; thick scribble lines; the scribble should be rotated 45-degrees counter-clockwise from the star point (i.e. right-handed scribble) b) a 75% partial circle with the radius line drawn straight down from the center, the 2 ends of the partial circle and the center are marked with solid dots, and the missing portion of the circle has a 135-degree angle; with the root of the angle as the top, this symbol is rotated 45-degrees counter-clockwise from the point of the star it is in c) a short line as the base, a much longer line (3:1) drawn up from the short line’s middle, capped with a circle with the same diameter as the short line, and topped with a 135-degree smooth arc; with the arc at the top, this symbol is not rotated relative to its star point – the main line of the symbol points directly at the star point d) a parallel double arc of less curvature than symbol “c”, positioned on top of a sideways tilde and with a short connection from the right end of the top arc to the middle of the right side of the bottom arc; the arcs are the top of this symbol and it is not rotated relative to its star point e) an equilateral triangle with its flat top sprouting two short curves, one to each side, with a solid dot balanced between and just above them; layer-wise on top of the bottom point of the triangle (covering it up/hiding it) is a circle with a diameter the same as the sides of the triangle and its center is ¼ the circle’s diameter from the triangle’s obscured bottom point; layer-wise on top of both the triangle and the circle is a diamond with two points being those points where the circle and triangle perimeters meet and the other points being the center of the circle and its mirror point stretching into the triangle The second image is of an electric guitar. It is a glossy black, six-string guitar with a swallowtail-shaped base/bottom (as opposed to rounded convex) and a metallic silver colored faceplate and neck plate; the bottom part of the tail is longer than the top part, as held right-handed. The art style should be realistic but not photorealistic, and *not*: cartoonish, hand-drawn (where you can still see the pencil lines), cell-shaded, pixelated, low-quality render, watercolor, etc. The final image combines these two component images, carefully layered. The pentagram (find a rotation that looks good) on top of the guitar (find a rotation that looks good), with the pentagram circle crossing the neck of the guitar and at least its longer tail fin.
*** Repeated : Technical Requirements *** All root files (e.g. Photoshop PSDs) are needed as part of the final submission. The final image must be a 6”x9” transparent PNG at 300dpi. The cover itself will be handled (not your responsibility and not part of this assignment) later when the back and spine text is determined. It would be ideal if the first component image (pentagram) was a vector graphic for future scalability/reusability on a website, but I don’t know how hard that is or whether that is realistic. Look at the attached images for additional clarification of the two component images.
