I deploy alongside our nation’s military overseas, where I spend several months out of every year separated from my family. Like so many in the armed services, and those who support them, I am always looking for ways to connect with loved-ones back home.
I wrote the poem, “You Are Always With Me”, with the intent of having it published in picture-book form. Written from the point of view of a deployed service member or civilian, the poem reassures those left behind by addressing the emotions they often feel: abandonment, anger, confusion, sadness, and fear for their loved one.
My desire is to collaborate with the chosen illustrator from this contest in a 1-to-1 project for the complete illustrations of the 24 page picture book. This will require approximately 18 total illustrations (including the cover from this contest), including graphic design and inclusion of the poem text. My budget is $4,000 for the completed project (in addition to the contest award). I would like to begin the illustration project soon after the contest ends, and envision 3-4 months complete the work -- faster if you can do it! I have a completed storyboard for the book with ideas for each illustration, but I look forward to integrating the original ideas of the illustrator. Please do not submit to the contest if you are unwilling to move forward with the illustration project as I've described.
