Dog Training 101: How To Raise a Playful Puppy To Become an Eager-To-Please Soulmate For Life
Sam Quinn, Founder of DogTail Productions
I have worked with a variety of dogs at home and my dog walking business. With two Rhodesian Ridgebacks of my own, I have trained some of the most stubborn breeds, and figured out what does and doesn’t work. I started off with dogs when I was 24 years old. I had wanted my own dog all my life, but grew up in a home that raised horses instead. As a child and young adult, I learned to train animals by riding and coaching horses, but I still never gave up on owning dogs. When I was finally able to adopt my own puppy, I chose a Rhodesian Ridgeback, known as a fairly difficult breed to train. I was told this was not a great choice for a first-time dog owner, but took the challenge anyway, and adopted a second Ridgeback a few years later. This started my passion for dog training, and I am now the proud owner of two very well-trained adult Ridgebacks. I have learned many tricks through the years, and have been inspired to share them with other dog owners with a desire to hold their pups behavior to a higher standard. As a life-long dog lover, I have crafted a guide to share my experience in the form of step-by-step training exercises and other informative insights. Dog Training 101: How To Raise a Playful Puppy To Become an Eager-To-Please Soulmate For Life offers training guidance for the most basic tasks, like sitting, staying, and fetching, to more complicated canine etiquette, like leash training and socializing with other pets. As a firm believer in positive reinforcement training, this guide strives to train your dog from puppy hood to adulthood while maintaining a healthy relationship with you. I highlight the advantages of using positive methods, and show how they are much more successful than using harsh punishments or negative incentives for dogs while training.
So, you want a dog, or maybe you’ve already adopted a dog and it’s a lot more trouble than you expected. You can picture a furry little ball of energy coming home in a box, tail wagging, ready to meet you and become your new best friend. But what happens next? In your imagination, maybe it’s a great day full of fun, bonding, and absolutely NO accidents… but how likely is that, really? Adopting a new puppy is a high risk, high reward situation for a lot of people, no matter what previous experience they might have. Every dog is different, and even the best research won’t prepare you for unexpected quirks and issues. The good news is that everything your dog does or doesn’t do is completely trainable. From potty problems to obedience training, you can handle it all with just three tools: positive reinforcement, patience, and [Insert Book Title] to guide you along the way!
