Reinvent Ideal: What to do When You're Depressed & No One Cares Because You're not a Chick
Cairo Copeland is a dating coach/personal trainer that works with the average, frustrated male and troubled young men who aren't getting the results they want with women and life.
How to find happiness as a male while living in a world that constantly tells you that you are inadequate. How to develop this happiness through the creation of inner joy rather than relying on external pleasure. To create a life like Kevin Hart in the Wedding Ringer as opposed to Joaquin Phoenix in Joker. Like the title suggests, it is to reinvent the collective perception is of an ideal male life. Instead of the poshy job, wife like June Cleaver, cute kids and a white picket fence, a greater happiness can be created even while being all by yourself. The text of the book does this by showing men how to recover from breakups, how to improve a loveless marriage, and how to handle continual rejection. It debunks the bag of goods sold by popular media such as the soul mate myth, the myth of romantic leagues and the myth of unmaried male misery. It shows men the advantages of being male that should inspire immediate relief and gratitude. How to develop an emotional intelligence that fights off feelings of depression before they even plant. How agency and altruism bring greater happiness than women and money. How to find your purpose, how to not be a doormat nice guy while also not turning into a jerk. In short, finding happiness after realizing that the ideal life and love life portrayed by the mass media is not real.
The average, frustrated male or troubled young man that is upset because he's still single, has few friends or none, while see the happiness of others posted all over social media. The guy that is addicted to porn or Netflix binging or video games, wishing his real life could better. The guy that's been rejected for dates over and over again, continuously swiped left on dating apps, wondering if there's something wrong with him. The guy that's in a relationship where he's not happy and feels his partner no longer finds him attractive or respects him. The guy that still hasn't recovered from a breakup with the woman he thought was his best chance at being his soulmate.
The title "Reinvent Ideal" is a play on the cliche "Reinvent the Wheel". If you can make a design that looks like the caveman chiseling out a stone to invent the wheel but upon closer look it's really something else (like a depressed guy chiseling out a statue of an ideal man), that would be amazing. Easier said than done, I know. Or, if you could design an image where it looks like one man who lives the awesome life (Will Smith in "Hitch", Kevin Hart in "The Wedding Ringer", etc.) is showing another guy who lives a sad life (Joaquin Phoenix in "Joker", Peter Parker before he became "Spiderman", etc.) how to have a better life, that would also be incredible. However, I'm very much in favor of giving designers lots of liberty to do what they think is best, as they know very well what they're doing. The main concepts I wish to have the cover depict is that this book is for depressed males, gives an uplifting message, will change your life and solve your sadness. It must make it very clear that this book is for males. We also produce a podcast of the same name, and I've attached the itunes thumbnail image used for it, if that helps convey the mood we currently try to portray.
What to avoid
Women would have no use for the book, so we wouldn't anything that would grab their attention. But on that note, while the book is very geared toward males, we don't want anything to suggest it's anti-female. This is not a woman-haters book. Avoid things that have been done before in happiness self-help books. We don't want potential readers to see the cover and be like, "Oh, it's another one of those books." I would also be inclined to abstain from emojis and smiley face cliches. While the book is meant to have a positive, uplifting effect, the idea is for it to be an evergreen guide and not make current pop culture references.
