All The Dead Seas
Simon Paul Woodward
Hello, I’m Simon Paul Woodward. I’m a horror, science-fiction and dark-fantasy writer. I live just south of London (London, England that is … not one of the 10 Londons in the USA, London Kiribati or 8837-London, which is an asteroid). It’s best to be precise about these things. Before I didn’t live on an asteroid, I was born in the Midlands, studied in the North and relocated to the South. My accent is a bit of a mess. I’ve written six books: two novels for young adults/adults (All The Dead Things: Deathlings Chronicles #1 and Dead Weapons); one young-adult/adult novella (Scrimshaw: Deathlings Chronicles #2); and three collections of horror short stories for adults (these are in at the editing stage and are due to be released later in 2020 into 2021). I love Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Michael Marshall Smith, David Mitchell, Patrick Ness, China Mieville, The Flaming Lips, Elbow, Ennio Morricone, Sergio Leone, David Lynch, David Lean, Johnny Marr, Max Richter, football and running, gin and bagels… but marzipan was created by the Devil (after he finished spawning brussel sprouts).
Pirates rising from the grave. A Cornish village that may not survive the night. A boy fighting to save his dead sister’s soul. A pirate deathling has trapped Tom in an impossible dilemma. Either he breaks a two-hundred-year-old curse, freeing the ghost and his crew to slaughter an entire village, or the ghost will damn his dead sister’s soul for eternity. Tom blames himself for his sister's death. When he returns to Little Sickle, the village where she died, he’s shocked to learn that her soul is still imprisoned there. Now he has one night to face his guilt, uncover the village’s wicked past and rescue her from a crew of bloodthirsty, deathling pirates. Damnation or redemption will be his by dawn. If you liked Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Graveyard Book or Skullduggery Pleasant, then you’ll love Scrimshaw, book two of the Deathlings Chronicles
13+ years, but also heavily read by adults.
Book cover type
This is a redesign and renaming of the second book in my Deathlings Chronicles Series. So it must work as pair with the book one cover - All The Dead Things (attached below). So the book name and author name must be the same or similar. And the feel must be the same. The book is a contemporary ghost story, with some humour, set in a Cornish village once home to pirates. The cliffs beneath the manor/house hotel at the centre of the story is riddled with caves and these could be part of the design. Fog features heavily. There is a scene with our heroes trying to rescue a scrimshaw coin from the bottom of the well, a couple of scenes featuring an Ouija board. And there is an array of gruesome deathlings (ghosts) that could feature - I will detail some examples below. "“Eloise, Eloise, yes, once I was Eloise, the pretty pirate princess.” An anguished expression crosses her face, then somehow she is centimetres from me. She is biting the inside of her mouth. I think there are tears in her eyes. “You thought me pretty when I stood by the fire. I could see the desire in your eyes. Do you still think me pretty?” Salt water falls from her mouth, vanishing before it touches me. Her lips are slick with it. A sliver of seaweed dangles from her chin. The little crab scuttles across her cheek and disappears into her right ear. I remember the painting in the locket. The girl standing by the fireplace in the library. The smell of fire on her skin." "I charge her and she stumbles away from me, laughing. I see the reason for her good humour emerging from the fog: pirates, lots of pirates, forming a barrier between me and India/Eloise. Up close, I can see their full horror. Skin charred black by a fire so intense it’s claimed fingers, noses and entire limbs. Some of their arms are nothing but bones rattling with jewelled rings. Lipless grins reveal blackened teeth. Worms and maggots burrow into skin that leaks putrescence. A mouth widens and a moray eel peers at me baring its teeth. The pirates don’t have eyes; their empty sockets have been filled with scrimshaw orbs - yellowing bone carved with an eye-within-an-eye design." "As my back presses against the ceiling, I see Monster and Lardy Linda turn the corner. Monster’s name is well chosen; his body is barrel shaped, and even with the damage wrought by his fiery death, he’s still hugely muscled. Lardy Linda's name must have been a joke because she’s thin as a twig. Her head has been burnt clean to the skull, except for a topknot of hair tied with a crimson ribbon. Her scrimshaw eyes rattle in their sockets as she walks."
What to avoid
The cover shouldn't be too gruesome.
It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their book cover.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
simonpaulwoodward collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
Another brilliant and detailed cover. I am always impressed with the vision and hard work that goes into the projects i have had completed by E-Django. I am looking forward to more in the future.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
