Meet Dizzinessdesign — a graphic designer from France who excels in packaging design. He is also a music lover and producer, which gives him great opportunities like designing mixtape covers for local DJs.
Dizzinessdesign is a morning person with 4am being his ideal time to work. Evidence of his early-morning-designing can be found in the photograph below.
Name: François Terrien
99designs handle: Dizzinessdesign
How did you get started in design?
I started copying and drawing magazine fonts before I started writing. Although I thought I was made to be a graphic designer, I turned my studies to Industrial Design at L’école de Design Nantes Atlantiques. Now, I create everything from furniture design to sound design to graphic design.
I’ve been a professional designer for 1 year now and I started my own business, Dizziness Design.
Describe your design style.
I’m an Adobe Illustrator addict! I like creating work that is pure vector and incorporates simple graphics onto clear spaces.
What led you to start using 99designs?
I found 99designs after searching for international clients. I was already working in Paris and Brussels with my own company and wanted more.
99designs offers market opportunities all over the world that I could never reach on my own. Thanks to 99designs, I’m proud to say I’m working on wine labels in Australia, premium vodka in the U.K., etc. This gives an amazing credibility to a young designer’s portfolio.
What do you think is the most important part of the design process?
Do something different — you only win if your design is different from all the others. A good designer does not stop at his first idea and more importantly, a graphic designer should not just put colors and fonts onto something… you need a strong concept to work with.
How would you sum up graphic design in one sentence?
“la laideur se vend mal (ugliness does not sell)” — Raymond Loewy
In your opinion, what are the key differences that separate great design from poor or mediocre design?
A good design is aware of trends and includes a strong conceptual base while still being understood in the market. Lastly, a good design is executed professionally by a skilled designer. Mediocre design is the opposite of this.
What is a hobby that you enjoy doing outside of graphic design?
I’m a music lover and (sometimes) a producer. This brings me really cool opportunities as a designer.
For example, I’m making almost all of DJ Atili Bandalero’s — the best DJ in Tours (37) who hosts Brigante Fm — communication and mixtape covers. I also made a few flyers for DJ IneedMony, who’s between France and the UK, and a poster for DeepHeat & the Wood, a label based in Brussel.
Albums or mixtape covers are great design projects!
Is there anything else you’d like to add? Now is the time to tell us. 🙂
The best time to work is a little after 4am and, depending on the days, it might be after or before I’ve slept. Since everyone is asleep, there’s no disturbing noises or light variation. Just give me something to eat and drink, some music and I’ll be fully efficient.
