Pi vs Pie Day

Happy Pi Day!

It’s March 14, and the holiday we bring you today was named for the irrational number representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It’s an unending number, starting with the digits 3.14 and going on and on and on. It’s a day to celebrate math, originated by Larry Shaw in San Francisco’s very own Exploratorium in 1988.

Unfortunately for pi (but fortunately for the rest of us!), it’s name sounds just like a way more popular item in contemporary culture: PIE. Inevitably, though many a nerd will embrace the math side of pi day, 3/14 ends up being the day when we all enjoy a slice of our favorite dessert or pizza.

Luckily, there are a bunch of clever designers out there celebrating pi and pie in all of it’s various forms. Here’s a collection of their fun work in honor of this day.

We’re hoping to see even more of these clever plays-on-words as the day goes on. Cutie Pi, Pie-Hard, Easy as Pi, Pie-rat… think of the possibilities!
