phillip.kobernick got their new banner ad by running a design contest:
Create an exciting and versatile banner for our employee Community Commutes Day

Alameda County's Clean Commute/Sustainability Program engages its network of employees to encourage alternative commutes such as driving, walking, transit, and carpooling. This ad will be used for an campaign that culminates in a major event, Community Commutes Day, in the spring, around Earth Day.
What's your vision?
We are looking for a main website/print ad banner that represents Community Commutes Day, an engagement campaign to our internal network of 9,000 employees. We want the banner to be versatile, used in an online intranet page, in emails, and in flyers to promote the day. We might even use it, or its main components, in buttons and stickers to be give to our employees. The audience is our government employees, which represent a broad spectrum of careers, from law-enforcement deputies, to social services workers, to health inspectors, to clerical staff, to carpenters, to construction workers. The majority of our workforce are from the baby-boomers generation. As a public-sector employer, we don’t have a lot of opportunities to celebrate or recognize our employees or have situations that draw them out of their typical day to day job - so this campaign should be a highlight and activity employees enjoy. The goals of the campaign are to encourage as many of our employees to switch from drive-alone commuting as possible while promoting a sense of community, both within their local offices (we have several dozen distinct offices in our organization) and a part of the larger community of our organization as a whole. Some of the major themes we want to express during this campaign, some, or most of which should be referenced or alluded to in the image are: excitement, empowerment, fun, and community building. Employees will compete in local teams for this campaign to encourage community building. We think more people would clean commute if they saw it as more convenient, doable, and were socially encouraged to do so. The main context of the program is commute modes. We’d like to feature images of people first and foremost, but also multiple modes of clean commuting to be inclusive (biking, walking, train transit, bus transit, carpool, etc.) This is the second of two recent campaign. We attached the logo for the first campaign, the Green and Healthy awards. This ad can be more complex and more of a visual scene than this, however. Also attached is the Clean Commute Program logo, which can be deconstructed and referenced in the ad. For instance, the green spiral was used in the Green and Healthy Awards and should be utilized here, as well. The full logo is likely to appear in flyer and other materials that this ad will be used in. The colors that we use are: #00738c (blue) #4d8830 (green) #333333 (black) Yellow - RGB255/210/0 - can be used as a complementary color. The day of the event is April 21 - this should be featured.
We want one size as 1600x726 pixels, 300 dpi, and we want a version that is shrinkable to be used in small items like buttons, for example 280x130. A square might be nice.

And then… they selected a winner!
This very capable designer helped me take my book design (which Asael himself completed in a contest) and created a book cover which has passed KDP's guidelines.
The lower price of this project is justified by the fact that Asael went the extra mile during the design contest and essentially created a book cover then. This project served to finalize some details.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
