I've met with the client. There are aspects of each of the three remaining designs that the clinet likes. The client thought gecku's submission was a little over done, but he really liked the masthead. He thought the design by visual depth was a bit plain. "I am a sinner" submitted the best design overall and is therefore the winner. I will contact both gecku and visual depth via PM and discuss using specific elements of their designs and compensation for that right. Congrats to "I am a sinner".

I just spoke with the client. He is very pleased with the overall quality of the designs. We're meeting on Friday afternoon to discuss them further. We will likely come out of that meeting with a winner. I'll update everyone as soon as I know something.

    All,

The entries now marked with 5 stars have been submitted to the client for review. As I mentioned before, if your design is 4 stars, I suggest you do not remove your entry just yet as there is a chance the client will want to look at more options.

Thanks again to all who submitted. I will select the winner as soon as I hear back from the client. This may take a couple days so please be patient.

Eddy, as you can see from my late reply, I haven't been around for the last couple of days, Mothers' Day plans came into play and didn't have time to get an entry together :-)

I'd go with a table in that middle section, because if you use the image as a bg called via the css, with text overlaid, this will certainly cause the layout to break when text is increased. I would slice it up and use it inside table cells where it will likely hold together better :-) Use of alt tags would help as would the overlib js library for hovering effect for additional text maybe.

Good entries you've received and good luck to all designers :-)

Thank you all very much for your submissions. As usual, I'm very pleased with the overall quality of the designs. I have rated all the submissions. Based on this rating, those with 4 stars will continue to be evaluated. Others will be eliminated from the contest. After I have re-evaluated all the 4 star submissions, I will select a few (likely 3-5) to submit to the client. Those that I will submit to the client will be changed to 5 stars. Whichever design the client chooses will be made the contest winner.

I would encourage those 4 star entries who do not make it to the five star round leave your submissions on the site until a winner is declared. There is a chance that the client will not like my choices and will need to see some other designs.

Thanks again to everyone who has submitted an entry.

    All,

I'll be leaving in about an hour for Mother's Day activities. If you have an entry that you'd like to see feedback on, you'll need to submit it before I leave. At any rate, we're getting close to the point where any changes I do request you may not have time to implement before the contest ends. I'll check back in an hour to see if there are any new submissions to rate.

Why aren't you entering Nadia? You've given some very valid comments. I'm a coder and not a designer so that's why I come here for the design work. My plan was to slice the main graphic and make it a background image in css and then overlay the text in the foreground. Of course to get exact placement, I may have to use tables, but such is life.

Just an observation and a heads up after reading Eddys' last general comment. The way some of these submissions are being designed, the ony way to get them coded is to use the full graphic in the middle of the content section and this doesn't bode well for search engine optimisation. And others, even if text is used, the layout would probably break once the text is increased in the browser... all this needs to be taken into consideration when creating a design - though this may be difficult for designers who are not coders to visualise/understand :-)

PS: I'm not entering this contest, so my comments are based as an observer, not as an entrant and in no way are designed to cause bias towards any design/designer.....

    All,

I wanted to provide a little more guidance. First, the target resolution is 1024x768 so your design should be a max of around 1000 pixels wide to account for the browser scrollbars. I apologize for not mentioning it sooner (though I wouldn't eliminate a design for that as it could be easily fixed). Second, the client is really prioritizing his search engine placement, so I'd really like to not use graphics for text content. That means that you should try to use standard web fonts anywhere possible.

    Thanks
    Eddy

    Createabit,

I hope you'll enter now that I've agreed to pay the $500 up front before delivery of the psd (or a total of $600 split in two payments).

Thank you for the clarification dumiretech. I understand your concern. I would think that most of the designers here would make any changes necessary to the PSD based on the clients feedback. I know I do.
