Design brief

Brief Summary

We are launching a new website that will help connect Spanish-speaking English learners with English-speaking Spanish learners. The site helps users have more targeted conversations that are guided by topics and interests, thus helping users expand their speaking ability and get beyond small talk. The site connects users for conversations using an embedded voice/video app.

Brand Name

www.lenguajero.com

Description

We are looking for a design for an sample page of a Spanish-English language learning site. The page should be the homepage of a user who is logged in and is currently receiving a message from another user to chat (see What I Want section for more details)

We are looking for a very clean, Web 2.0 design that is easy to navigate, fun to use, and helps create an enjoyable user experience.  We have already chosen a logo so all designs should incorporate this logo into the site design.  The logo can be found at http://99designs.com/contests/21523/designers/274371#entry-104

lenguajero.com is a website that pairs language learners and native speakers together for conversations.  Students find partners by choosing topics they would like to talk about from a pre-defined list of interesting topics (eg. current event, youtube video, etc.). Students then prepare for the conversation which is held in both languages. Additionally, users can add their own topics and request learning help from a native speaker.  Our goal is to enable users to move beyond the small-talk that normally occurs on other language exchange sites (see site list below).   We're currently only thinking of making the site available to Spanish and English learners.

This site is aimed at anyone who is either an English speaker learning Spanish, or a Spanish speaker learning English.  While anyone could be using our site we predict that the average user will between 18-35 years old, have a working knowledge of the language they are learning, and be motivated to practice speaking their second language.

The site design should invite users to have conversations (i.e. it should be easy to navigate, easy to find a language partner, and easy to initiate a conversation).

While I have listed some specific desires in the following "what I want" section, we are also open to a creative web 2.0 navigational approach and invite you to submit anything that you feel is an alternative approach to the standard navigational model (99designs.com is an excellent example of this approach)

List of Language Exchange Sites (Note: We are looking for our own style and do not want a copy of any of these sites.)

busuu.com, livemocha.com, sharedtalk.com, italki.com
