I entered this contest, and I suppose that if they did go through them all, then I wasnt rated, o well, next time.

#1920 and #1916 were two of mine. I did not have an acceptable image of my own, so I went through my resources, and read the license agreements for certain sites. If one of mine were chosen, I would have been able to hand over the information to provide license information.

    For reference: http://www.cgtextures.com/content.p…on=license

There are many comments about a new person entering / winning this contest. What about people like me who only recently found this site? Would you have called foul if someone like me won? Seems elitist to me.

There are ways to tell if the image is for real or stock photo through
photoshop. One thing is all the images from stock sites are copyrighted
and the adobe programs pic it up like water marks to the eye. I went to
college and can tell you that all the people that didn't read the rules
have zero ethics what so ever when $5000.00 is at stake. Instead of the
star ratings system the host should have eliminated designs so that it
cuts through the mess this contest created. Sorry but next time you go
into a book store take a good look at the covers and ask when you look
at what has the most stars on here, would you buy the book?

As for the people that think taking images off stock sites and other
places on the net you will not get caught? Think again as you are dealing
with a multi-national design group that has more designers like myself
that know what we are look at in a photo to tell where that image you
    used came from orginally.

    T-Girl:

I agree with the majority of what you said, except for the issue of proving that a photo is yours. I have the original uneditied copy of my photo, and the camera data info file.

The problem with stock images is this..Even if you purchase the image from say i-stock, etc. you DO NOT purchase the copywrite. The images CAN NOT be resold in anyway..You CAN NOT make a profit on them..You can only use them for your personal use period. If the Ch wanted to use a stock photo he would have to try to purchase the copywrite to the image and stock photo sites rarely do that. If they did that they could not resell the image to anybody else hence lose money...

Who would number one want to get sued. Number 2 have the same image on their book that somebody else may use later on down the line. (By the way if copywrite was not purchased they would have no leg to stand on in court if number 2 happend)

The hole thing about the way this contest has been run is that they explicitly said no stock images...That was pretty trusting because anyone could say I took that picture and unless you are prepared to search through millions of stock photos to check how would you ever know..

Also, I know for a fact that i-stock, and shutter stock state that there stock images and or clip-art CAN NOT be used for these types of materials and they are large enough if they spot any of their images they could very well sue..

They could also sue the printer that prints the materials without a copywrite release..I know this because I work in printing and we take copywrite very seriously..

Just a suggestion but if it were me I would choose a cover with NO picture on it and add one of my own later..It is the safest way to go in this case..

this contest was also posted on other websites that 99 was holding it not saying that those who signed up just for this contest aren't designers but there probaly are a few who say the prize went on their computer and threw something together without even reading the brief and may not have even known what a stock photo is. Unfortently there's no way when you post your final that we could of also posted the trail of work it took for us to get to the final you'd be surprised at how many people could'nt produced original photos and trail of work, if i needed to all i have to do is direct everyone to my myspace you will see 100 photos of the same little girl i used on the cover

But just because a design is for a Christian Author doesn't mean he wasn't crosses, Jesus, doves, and all those typical "I'm a Christian" symbols? ya know?

about the ratings, ok...I don't have any ratings on any of mine, which is fine...guess they are out of the running. If the rules are truly being broken, then find the correct way to file a complaint. Though, I can understand what you are saying...

@LRoyce they have ratings on almost all of the pages, not just up to pages 8 or 9. I know this because I have a design back near the beginning without a rating. I don't care if they don't like my design or whatever, I only do 99designs just to pass time when I am waiting to hear back from my clients.

However, I can understand people's frustration with "the church" and this contest. Perhaps saying "vile" things isn't the best thing to do but it happens I guess.

@L. Royce I think a lot of designers feel cheated now because there are some designs using stock photos that are receiving star ratings.

Seems like Rick's team is really making people upset.

I just want to say one thing about the stock photos: please don't forget that sites like istockphoto and other stock photo sites rely on their users to upload the stock photos. Therefore, it is possible that the person using the photo is the one that uploaded it and has the rights to it to begin with. I am sure that is a very SLIM chance but a chance nonetheless. I am not even sure how you would prove that.

However, this contest does seem fishy now.
