Design brief

Yellow Green Beret, Volume II

Description of business

After growing up in Northern California, I attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, and served in the United States Army as an Armor and Special Forces officer while based in Korea and Japan, respectively. I served and deployed in four combat tours to Iraq and the Philippines, and received several medals for my accomplishments, including two Bronze Star Medals. I also worked extensively throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East in special operations missions, and have lived in ten countries since leaving California. I was also selected for early promotion to major prior to a voluntary and honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. Yellow Green Beret is my first book.

or Special Forces officer-turned-writer Chester Wong, being a Green Beret was tough business. Okay, there were a few laughs—in fact, there were countless random acts of hilarity, but maybe it’s how Wong looks at life that makes the difference. In Yellow Green Beret: Stories of an Asian-American Stumbling around U.S. Army Special Forces, one thing is certain: becoming an Asian American Green Beret is a calling only the wild should answer.

Whether or not you’re in the Army, there’s a whole lot of adventure and a whole lot of “who’d have thoughts” and “imagine thats” in this military memoir. With short stories like “Johnnie Walker Brown,” “Wily Filipino Cell Phone Thieves,” and “Sniper School: Extending the Range of Personality Lethality,” Wong pokes fun at the ironies of special operations combat, the idiosyncrasies of military life, and the absurdities of life on the frontline; more often than not he heckles his own harebrained ways. Each vignette is a standalone anecdote; sometimes there’s a lesson, sometimes it’s just for a laugh. He reminisces his West Point and Special Forces training, working with various militaries in Southeast Asia, and serving in Iraq and the Philippines, as well as general tidbits of military life. With a self-deprecating humor style, he leaves readers rolling with laughter and reflection on his unique observations and lessons learned from a path not often taken, which is good since this memoir is the first in a three-part collection.

Description

I have uploaded the first book cover for Yellow Green Beret, Volume I. I am looking for a book cover for the second volume.

I want it to look almost exactly the same - the same font placement, same colors, same placement of the avatar on the right hand side.

Instead of having a tropical island in the background, I'd like to try two versions of for the second cover.

1. The first one is having the backdrop of urban, burnt-out Iraq. I imagine the buildings to have gaping holes in them, destroyed from firefights and air strikes. The roads and buildings should be gridded. The buildings should not be higher than two or three stories, and they are all mashed up against each other - no alleyways. I imagine a very large sun overlooking to emphasize the heat. The colors should be grey and brown to convey the desert and arid nature of Baghdad. The avatar should be in desert camouflage fatigues.

Like in the first cover art, there are small black images of nipa huts and palm trees. In this one, I'd like to see small black figures of soldiers (about 20-30 of them), getting ready or in the process of storming a house in the background behind the avatar.

A mosque's silhouette needs distinctly to be in the background somewhere and nearby it can be Arab dressed mea and women.

2. The second one is having the backdrop of West Point. The photo uploaded is the angle that I would want to see of West Point - of the front two barracks and the chapel in the distance. The scene should be in the winter - snow on the ground. The cadets should be in the back dressed up very warmly in the winter uniform, which I've uploaded for reference and photos. The avatar should be dressed in a white arctic camouflage uniform like in Inception or the the movie Shooter.

There should be many cadets walking around in the background that look very busy.

----

If there are both great designs for both the Baghdad and the West Point cover designs, then I will award two prizes.

I am looking for the art style to be very similar to the first one - a bit cartoony and artsy.

Thank you

Further requirements

The key is that it's going to look very similar in style to the first cover that I've already uploaded.

Feel free to check out http://www.yellowgreenberet.com or Chester Wong - Yellow Green Beret on Facebook for some free excerpts to get a better feel for the book's style - it's more humorous, but I think the juxtaposition of a very serious background with the casual expression on the avatar goes well together.
