CloseDesign brief
The site is called Computer Vision Primer, URL http://inperc.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page. It is devoted to computer vision, digital image analysis, related math, and applications.
Computer Vision Primer
The visitors are engineers and researchers, from both industry and academia, programmers, and students.
The design of the image should generally follow the idea of the front cover of a textbook with “Computer Vision Primer” on it.
The site has a text area on a black background. Screenshot is attached, with your image to be inserted at the top part of the text area above the text (the crossed rectangle).
The graphics should relate to the purpose of the site, in some indirect way. Images of: a magnifying glass, a microscope, numbers flying around, a person looking at a computer screen, etc wouldn’t work.
For the graphics idea, consider the image that I currently use (attached). It depicts hands with interlaced fingers and the point here is that it takes image analysis to sort it out. The graphics both presents a real image and invokes the science needed to analyze it. I like this image, so one option is to try to incorporate it (or a variation) into your design. But I am certainly open to other ideas. You can browse the site itself for inspiration.
For the overall design, take a look at these book covers (most are boring):

Please submit sketches of your designs as a part of the page, i.e. inserted in the screenshot image.
Format of the final image: .psd, depicted proportions, editable text.
